TICKMAYER FORMATIO: Lost and Found 1984 - 1989: intellectual Cabaret Orkestra and duos
Nineteen recordings from Novy Sad (now Serbia but then Jugoslavia), all but one previously unreleased, and masterminded by Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer, who also plays prepared and unprepared piano, double bass, zither, vibraphone, saxophone, drums, electric guitar, melodica, violin and harmonium. Though performing here, Stevan’s high forte is composition - although along roads less trodden and in a highly personal style; this is a music that repudiates style, mixing or shifting between the vocabularies of jazz, noise, punk, contemporary classical, avant-garde and…indeed, a form of intellectual cabaret. On the majority of tracks Stevan appears alongside the uncategoriseable percussionist Dorde Delibasic who also adds, on occasion, electric guitar and electronics. It’s a highly original bucking bronco of a band, with moods. Otherwise, two of the pieces here are for larger ensembles of 8 and 16 pieces, three are impressive duets - with saxophonist Istvan Grensco, pianist Szabados Gyorgy and bassist Peter Kowald - and one, with prepared piano, violin and viola. This is another important piece of musical history that was almost lost, here recuperated in a small private edition by a stubbornly oppositional local cultural organisation. Excellent sound, especially considering some of the sources; in a nicely made package with a booklet of notes in both Serbian and English. Important.
