EASTMAN, JULIUS: The Zurich Concert
EASTMAN, JULIUS: The Zurich Concert
Very slowly Eastmanís fascinating and maverick oeuvre is being rediscovered, though much is lost (but thatís another story, from his even more extraordinary - some would say - tragic, life). Best known as a singer (Maxwell Davisí 8 songs for a Mad King, for instance, the most demanding in the literature and a catalogue of extended techniques) and a composer (for his uncategoriseable surviving works), this CD reproduces a piano improvisation from a concert in Zurich in 1980 (not something Eastman was particularly noted for) taken from a cassette recording of perfectly acceptable quality, which is neither free jazz nor what we now expect of piano improvisation -  and itís certainly not noise or minimalism. In fact it sounds, more than anything, like some sort of semi-daemonic composition, with occasional semi-daemonic singing. Itís a priceless document if youíre interested in Eastman Ė and a riveting listen if youíre not.
