HODELL, AKE: Verbal Brainwash and other Works
The Swedish electronic community was always on the radical wing of electronic new music and, amongst them, Hodell was always something of an extremist. These are all text-sound pieces (this was a particularly Swedish contribution to new hybrid electronic forms) and the works included here are mostly something like art-radio pieces, highly political and more to the effective point than concerned with subtle sonicity. Included are his famous USS Pacific Ocean, Where is Eldridge Cleaver, Mr. Smith and Rhodesia and 22- volt Buddha – along with Spirit of Ecstasy, Racing Car Opera and 12 other substantial works. This is the definitive collection, selected by the man himself, and has been extremely well produced - with plenty of documentation - by Fylkingen – who have been promoting experimental Swedish music since the 1930s. There are three CDs in a box with a 40pp book of notes, texts, photographs, sound-text scores and some of Hodell’s visual artworks. It’s a must for historians and fans – and of great general interest to anyone just looking for experimental art with its roots in the ground.
