Welcome reissue on CD of the first
recordings from the then loose sound and visual art collective that later
morphed into Biota. Made and released in 1979 by an ensemble of 13, it
features mainly electric instruments, brass, vocalisation, tapes and (not
necessarily conventional) percussion - including piano. With good definition, clean
depth of field, transparency and a wide stereo image, the mood is discursive
rather than energetic. Though each of the four pieces differs in mood and
colour, all share the same sense of a dispassionate and organic coexistence of autonomous
elements. It's very different from the juggernaut delirium of their classic Horde
but both respect the notion of sound as something separate from its makers - a
sum greater than its parts, and with an implacable life of its own.
