In 2012, at guitarist Luciano Margorani's request, Chris Cutler recorded a set of formal drum tracks to fairly precise specifications - 'march, abstract and quiet, non-rhythmic that slowly becomes rhythmic...', &c.. At the time - with a release in mind - these were used as the basis for bass and guitar improvisations, but eventually set aside. Fourteen years later Luciano and multi-instrumentalist Dario D’Alessandro returned to the drum stems, this time taking them as superstructures on which to build more formal compositions. The result is a set of full-blooded pieces for bass, drums, keyboards, guitar and tuned percussion that are mostly instrumental, occasionally with choral additions. A fascinating experiment. And an interesting result.
