BALL, DANIEL: Daniel Ball Plays The Classics

This is a must for those with an ear for left-field experiment. It offers highly unusual arrangements of pieces from the classical repertoire (Debussy's La Mer, Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances, Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade, Saint-Sains' Danse Macabre and Charles Ives' Unanswered Question) scored - variously - for bass, drums, percussion, vibraphone, marimba, harp, piano, guitar, accordion, violin and trumpet - led, counterintuitively, by the percussion: there are remarkable drum parts and assignations here. With a clean, clear sound, precise playing and very little that's legato, it's very far removed in both sound and mood from the compositions it adapts - to the degree that these are essentially new pieces - with a compositional logic that often seems mysterious. That's not a criticism, it's an attempt to describe a conflict of languages - and an attempt to reconcile them - which leads to a record that, while not always plain sailing, tries seriously to explore novel musical terrain.
