A sharp, highly focussed set of shortish compositions for drums and two saxophonists, none of whom does much of what's expected, by which I want to say that this collection is impressive in the variety of its sounds, combinations, and compositional investigations. Each track introduces some new idea, and they make everything count; there's no freewheeling. At the same time, it's measured, considered and quite delicate - they never hide banality under energy or emotion. For those few left with time for something different; something with some intelligence built in; something treading its own modest path, I can recommend this unconventional, often surprising release.
