This is the fifth CD from this increasingly sophisticated 5-piece (bass, drums, guitar, tenor sax and vibraphone) who play well arranged, long-form, rock-rooted and jazz-inflected compositions, with a good sense of dynamics. This is a confident, relaxed, but always concentrated music that might have existed in the ‘70s or ‘80s, but would still not sound dated. And because it’s live – and the sound is excellent – it has that edge. Substantial parts of the concert were freely improvised, in the old rock manner, influenced by the European/RIO school of extension and extrapolation rather than pure abstraction. Highly unfashionable in both its aesthetic and its musicality, this is an endangered species and worthy of nurture.
