BOLANOS, CESAR: Peruvian Electroacoustic and Experimental Music (1964-70) (dbl CD)
One of the key figures in the Latin American mid-century avant-garde, Bolanos is represented here - for the first time in a definitive signature collection - with a series of highly evolved and varied works that mix tape material with environmental recordings, ensembles and individual instruments, and slips easily between what might be thought of as contemporary, electronic and concrete music, experimental free jazz, montage and music-theatre; always interestingly and surprisingly; I-10-AIFG./Rbt-1 (1968!) is an eye-opener: a very diverse palette disposed in bewildering juxtapositions. A fascinating piece. On CD 2 (all from 1970) computers appear, highlights are a very nice piece for piano (2 players) and tape that uses all manner of extended techniques, many ignored parts of the piano and highly radical processing to highly persuasive effect.
There are some really great pieces here, new to us. An important collection. L
