SCOTT, RAYMOND/The Secret Seven: The Unexpected
SCOTT, RAYMOND/The Secret Seven: The Unexpected

Originally released in 1960, with seven (in fact eight) – musicians Scott thought would be immediately recognisable (hence the Secret Seven, because none are named on the LP; you can try to guess) - who cover piano, vibraphone, harmonica, trumpet, guitar, tenor saxophone, organ, bass, drums, and some truly strange vocalising. As always with Scott, there are electronic tweaks and strange arrangements, so it’s not properly jazz and there aren’t any killer solos – neither is it exotica, really – though it does edge close at times. But it’s quirky. Sometimes very quirky. Scott’s own compositions here spiral, pretty unrecognisably, around various nursery rhymes - and then there are arrangements of Gershwin, Arlen/Harburg, Cole Porter and Brown/Freed songs. It’s twisted, intelligent easy listening, beautifully done, well recorded and full of tiny details and great performances. Comes with a generous book  containing Nat Hentoff’s original sleevenotes, photographs and a note on the origins and the re-mastering.  L
