JOHN CAGE: The Works for Percussion 3
Continuing the exhaustive Mode Cage catalogue, here are two pieces for amplified plant materials, one for solo snare drum, one for a Steinberger electric bass and one for a collection of frame-drums. There are also two composites made from the three solo pieces superimposed upon one another, which says something, though I'’m not sure what. While interesting, these are interpretations that, to my taste are perhaps a little too Cagean; I would have cheated (as all the best interpreters do) to make better shapes and structures, but then... There’s still much of interest here; and it certainly makes you listen in a different way. One, for solo drummer reaches some strange places and the piece for bass guitar is pretty persuasive.
