CHARMING HOSTESS:  Eat - VAC 016 - £12
Voices are generally so underdeveloped at the outer fringes of rock (there are some exceptions: Mike Patton comes to mind) but here they take centre stage, with a whole set of highly individual voices and a radical approach to harmony, microtonality and multi-layering. The Hostesses make highly accessible but not simple music, characterised by excellent arrangements and strong leanings to various folk and experimental rock traditions. It's dense but clean. Sometimes Skeleton Crew comes to mind. It's an original and eclectic mixture, bound together by a central idea and highly focussed performances. A fine, fresh first CD. And nicely packaged.

DRAKE, BOB:  Little Black Train - CTA 6 - £11
Thinking Plague, Hail, EC Nudes, 5UU's bassist and mixmaster with his second solo CD. Fast and furious country picking meets weird fragmentation and fast cut compositions. Guitars, Bass, Drums, Violin and odd unidentifiable noises all flawlessly performed, recorded and mixed into a single organism of musical strangeness. One of a kind.

IMPROVISED MUSIC FROM JAPAN:   31 Artists and 3 duos, 10 CDs, Fat booklet. Box. Limited Edition - IMJ-10CD - £120.00
Wooden Presentation Box with a nicely designed set of 5 solid double gatefold board packs and a flatbound 80pp book of notes in English and Japanese that includes pieces by Otomo Yoshihide, Haco, Ground Zero, Kasuhisa Uchihashi, Happiness Proof, Hoahio, Tetsuro Yasanaga, Toshimaru Nakamura, Yoshimitsu Icihraku cymbal orchestra, Sachiko M, Taku Sugimoto, Ami Yoshida,Yumiko Tanaka, Michihiro Sato, Michiyu Yagi, Ryoji Kaiyu, Mitsuru Natsuno, Atsuhiro Ito, Seiichi Yamamoto, Aki Onda, Eye Yamatsuka, Kazuo Imai - featuring all manner of instruments - electric, acoustic, traditional, virtual, invented, converted, adopted, unlikely - and all manner of ways of making and organising the sounds they make. A lot is covered here (fascinating to compare this set with the 'Not necessarily English Music' double - see below - at least the subject of a doctoral thesis). It is, however, pretty strictly for those who know what to expect. There is a preponderance of minimal and electronic works, mirroring developments of the last few years in Japan: austerity and abstraction rather than energy and expressionism. It's expensive, but it is a one-off limited edition and it does capture the state of play of a vital school at a critical and fascinating moment. All praise and honour to editor Yoshiyuki Suzuki.

New Music Workshop led by BORIS KOVACS: Silencio - Order by name - £12.50
Nine compositions by various hands performed by this 10-piece ensemble led by Boris who also plays. String based, with voices (mostly instrumental/choral), guitar, bass and Boris himself. Varied programme: Chamber music, meditative, Balkan dance.. Limited number produced, by Boris. Order soon.

ALBERT MARCOEUR:   Albert Marcoeur - M1 1976 - £12.75
At last, the reissue, on their own label, of the classic first Marcoeur Brothers' album; one of the great landmark records of the early 70s and still a model of originality and imagination today. Like nothing and no one else, this collection of eccentric songs, with extraordinary and extended arrangements immediately became a classic. Deservedly.

ALBERT MARCOEUR:   Plusiers cas de Figures - M8/2000 - £12.75
Like Van Dyle Parks, Albert is sparing but a perfectionist; this is his first new work for a long long time, and again an exemplar of measured strangeness; it creates its own ground. The instrumentation is extensive and unusual - but restrained - and the arrangements flawless. A modest gem.

OSTERTAG BOB: Sooner or Later £12 - By Name
Long out of print, now reissued in limited edition metal boxes by Bob himself, Sooner or Later is a powerful piece (for sampler) derived from the sounds of a Salvadorian boy burying his father: a shovel striking rock, a voice, a buzzing fly. Some guitar sounds by Fred Frith are added in part two. This tells only of the sources; what Bob does with them is compelling and hypnotic.
PAUL PLIMLEY TRIO: Safe-Crackers - VICTO CD 066 - £12
RING RING 99: Around the World (Various artists) - £12
Since we were busy illegally bombing Jugoslavia last year, it was impossible to hold the annual Ring Ring festival in Beograd. So, artists around the world organised Ring Ring around the world concerts during the planned festival weekend to ensure that in spite of the murderous ambitions of our governments the festival would go ahead anyway. It goes without saying that the organisers of this festival are no more connected with the territorial policies of their governments than you, I hope, are with yours. So this was an expression of proper solidarity with real people and their desire to get on with their lives in spite of the greed and stupidity of their leaders. There is always a compilation CD released after each festival and this one is no exception. Contributors include Haco, Filament, Tudosok, Steve Buchanan, NORMA/Chris Cutler, Phantasmagoria and Eva Kant. This year Ring Ring was again held, not without difficulty, in Beograd. Buy this CD. And the previous Ring Ring compilations. Life is hard enough.
ROSE, JON: The Violin Factory £11 - HDCD001
Made with a 25 piece string orchestra, Er Hu, factory guide and additional processing by Kaffe Mathews, this is a through composed, modular work hung around a tour of a Chinese violin factory, with interruptions. Rich, highly listenable and more like real music than most of Jon’s wilder records (I know he’ll forgive me for that if it will trick you into buying it). Pitch 2: another great record from the Woody Allen of music (experimental, prolific, obsessed, undervalued). Just buy it. Great booklet, text and packaging, this is a Czech release by the curator of the Rosenberg Museum, Violin (no kidding).

A rare recording of the 1970 quintet (with Dean and Dobson added to the classic trio) which includes versions of Eamonn Andrews, Moon In June, We did it Again, Backwards. Taken from the same (professional) tapes as "Facelift" (on Soft Machine Third), sound quality is good. Vital for SM fans.
