The re-formed 5UU's first CD, featuring, one-of-a-kind drummer Dave Kerman with new line-up: Sanjay Kumar (keyboards) and Bob Drake (Bass, Guitar, Vocals) and guests Susanne Lewis, Tom Dimuzio, and James Grigsby. Power, complexity and intelligence - an express train that can pirouette on a dime.

ARCANE DEVICE:  Engine Of Myth (vinyl) - ReR 35 - £8.30
David Myers has invented an instrument (see the ReR Quarterly Volume 2, Number 3 for details) that produces sound, as it were out of nothing: Feedback music. It screams, whispers, roars, ululates, explodes, divebombs, twitters, reverberates endlessly in vast and detailed soundscapes; sets two sound-mirrors face to face creating infinite reflective spaces. DM struggles to control this machine and give its massive voices shape. The result is huge, intimate and altogether remarkable.

ART BEARS
Art Bears was Chris Cutler, Fred Frith and Dagmar Krause. These records mark a radical contribution both to the song form and to studio technique.

BIOTA

BIOTA is a unique project consisting of both musicians and artists. Their work is complex, subtle, vast, exquisite and powerful. Layers and layers of processed sound, all originating in played, mostly acoustic sources. All CD's come with books of prints by their visual art component.
See also Mnemonist Orchestra

BIOTA:  Bellowing Room/Tinct - ReR BCD2 - £11
'Bell/Tinct' comprises 78 minutes of two complete (now deleted) LP's. An extraordinary, compact and somehow timeless unfolding of recognisable and unrecognisable sound, permanently mutating or being shattered or imbricated.

BIOTA: Tumble - ReR BCD - £11
'Tumble' is a commissioned for CD work, using the maximum available parameters offered by the medium. More recognisable organisation of materials here.

BIOTA: Almost Never - ReR BCD3 - £11
'Almost Never' returns to the deep layering and density of the earlier 'Horde'.

BIOTA: Object Holder - ReR BCD4 - £11
Stunning thorough worked piece that breaks new ground altogether; an extraordinary achievement, 3 years in the making and rewriting a lot of rules. Text and singing (Susanne Lewis, inimitably) Also features Charles Vrtacek (Piano), Andy Kredt (Guitar) and Chris Cutler (percussion, electrics, texts). A Dense, profound field of sound, music, silence.

BIOTA: Invisible Map - ReR BCD5 - £11
A long time coming this one, but as always, well worth the wait. Technically, this is the usual uncategorise-able mixture of primitive electronic, ethnic antique and conventional instruments, multilayered processing and meticulous construction. Aurally, vast, three dimensional sonic landscapes emerge in sharp Dalian detail, matched in the accompanying (generous) booklet with lapidary artworks from the visual component of the band. Extraordinary.

BLEGVAD, PETER  See also books

BLEGVAD, PETER:  Downtime - ReR PBCD - £11
Compiled over two years without the pressure of Peter's major label releases, giving time for the songs and for Peter's singing to speak for themselves. More "personal" and less obviously "commercial", with playing and production dedicated to the song, rather than trying to shape a surface that should do well in the marketplace. The result is sometimes eccentric, often subtle, generally always a little surprising. + Chris Cutler, Tony Maimone, John Greaves, Mick Hobbs, Stoffer Blegvad and others.. Full text booklet. The CD has 4 pieces more than the LP.

BLEGVAD, PETER: Just Woke Up - ReR PB2 - £11
For my money, the best yet. Great songs performed by Peter, John Greaves, Chris Cutler and various guests including B.J. Cole, Kristoffer Blegvad and Jakko Jakszykx. Roll back the carpet, turn up the stereo.
Audio samples

BLEGVAD, PETER: Hangman's Hill - ReR PB3 - £11
13 New songs from the master of witty, cynical but wistful songs, Peter Blegvad. With John Greaves and Chris Cutler. Follow up to the masterly Just Woke Up, sporting great new songs and guests including B.J.Cole, Geraint Watkins, Adam X, Chris Stamey, Bob Drake, Stoffer Blegvad.

CASSIBER

Cassiber always operate on fringes, always a little wild and always radical. Now hailed as "postmodern", though they aren't that out of date yet. Casssiber extends the idea of songs pretty much out of shape, and continues to be radical with the new technology.

CASSIBER:  Man or Monkey - ReR CCD2 - £11
Christoph Anders, Heiner Goebbels, Alfred Harth, and Chris Cutler. Wild, raw and subtle by turns.

CASSIBER:  Beauty and The Beast - ReR CCD3 - £11
A reissue of this long out of print classic - includes the great "In Eine Minute", "Last Call" and "Robert".This is the full UK version - plus the rare 7'; special "Time Running Out" as a bonus track.

CASSIBER: Perfect Worlds - ReR B0000CD - £11
Trio without Alfred. "Perfect" is as much "drama" (in terms of soundworld, not dialogue) as "music".
Audio Samples

CASSIBER: A Face We All Know - ReR CCD - £11
Christoph Anders, Heiner Goebbels, and Chris Cutler. "A Face" breaks new ground altogether. This is a single work with texts by Chris Cutler, Rainald Geotz and Thomas Pynchon and documents the last days of a political nightmare. Start here.

CASSIBER/GROUND ZERO:  Live in Tokyo/Ground Zero remix (dbl) - ReR CGZ2 - £16.60
This is a collection of pieces developed from and using the live recordings of Cassiber's Tokyo performance by Otomo Yoshihide and Ground Zero. This is also in part a tribute, and it is the last recording of Ground Zero, marking the end of Otomo's main project of the last 7 years. Taken together, these have much to say about the connections, innovations and changes at the musical boundaries between the mid 80's and late 90's.

CMCD:  Oswald,Katzer,Glandien,Moore - ReR CMCD - £11
THE CLASSIC COLLECTION of Contemporary, Concrete, Tapeworked and Processed works - and an indispensible survey of a crucial field: Georg Katzer's 'Aide Memoire', John Oswald's 'Parade', Lutz Glandien's 'Es Lebe', Steve Moore's 'A Quiet Gathering', Jaroslav Krcek's 'Sonaty Slavickove and the classic 'Homaggio a Jerry Lee Lewis' by Richard Trythall. Generous book and pictures.

COOPER, LINDSAY:  Rags/The Golddiggers - ReR LCD - £11
Consists of the whole of the LP previously issued as Re/arc and most of "The Golddiggers". Also appearing: Lindsay Cooper, Sally Potter, Phil Minton, Georgie Born, Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Marilyn Mazur, Kate Westbrook, Collette Lafont, Eleanor Sloan, Lol Coxhill and Dave Holland. Full book of texts and pictures (74+ minutes).

CUSAK, PETER: Where Is the Green Parrot? - ReR PC1 - £11
Welcome release from this subtle but complex composer- performer -instrument designer. More than musical, these are dramatic constructions with environmental sound, birdsong, conversation, narrative... the guitar shop section of "two small boys go shopping" is a masterpiece.. A record hard to describe since it deftly side-steps all the usual categories.
Audio samples.

CUTLER, CHRIS/FRED FRITH:  Live in Moscow, Prague etc. - ReR CCFFCD - £11
72 minutes consisting of the whole of a 1978 Prague concert, a cause celebre at the time, (audibly) dividing the 3500 public and provoking controversy for some years after, a snippet from Washington, and the whole of a Moscow concert 10 years later (May '89). This is improvised music that refuses to fit into the usual categories of improvisation, as well as being technically and formally provocative.

CUTLER, CHRIS/FRED FRITH:  Live in Trondheim etc - RER CCFFCD2 - £11
Digital recordings from the Nordlydd Contemporary Music Festival and Berlin's Tacheles from 1991. Plus the historic prescient noise-music 1978 analogue recording from Limoges as a bonus. All singing, all dancing, all hell let loose. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee...

CUTLER, CHRIS and FRED FRITH:  Two Gentlemen in Verona - ReR CCFF3 - £11
An almost complete concert from Verona, 1999, slightly edited for listening logic. Impeccably clear; transparent sound. Very different from CCFF1 and 2, this documents a more upfront, intense performance, full of history, rock, post rock, tunes, rhythms, even melodies - all transformed into a contemporary and compressed musical language. Surprising encore!
Audio samples.

CUTLER, CHRIS/LUTZ GLANDIEN:  Domestic Stories - ReR LSMCD - £11
Single work song cycle written by CC and LG, with Fred Frith, Dagmar Krause and Alfred Harth. Full book of texts and pictures. Following on from Art Bears and News From Babel. Cover by Peter Blegvad.
Audio samples

CHRIS CUTLER/STEVEN TICKMAYER/BOB DRAKE: The Science Group: ...a mere coincidence... - ReR SCIENCE1 - £11
A CD of songs following on from Art Bears, News From Babel and Domestic stories: the next instalment. This time coauthors are Stevan Tickmayer and Bob Drake. Science Group completed by Fred Frith, Amy Denio and Claudio Puntin. Dense, composed, gallon in a pint kind of a record, about, as the title suggests, the edges of hard science.
Audio samples.

CUTLER, CHRIS/TOM DIMUZIO: Quake - ReR CCTD1 - £11
Recorded at two concerts in Lowell and Portland in March 1999. Great blocks of sound alive with detail, sometimes massive, sometimes attenuated near to silence; sometimes it's hard to know what instruments if any are involved. Growling and Tearing. Glacial movements alive with an emergent order? Process of becoming? Two guys making a lot of noise? Nice object.
Audio samples.

DIMUZIO, TOM:  Headlock - ReR TD1 - £11
Reissue of the classic new generation Musique Concrete LP, this is an historic document - with extra contemporary material pursuing the rich drone techniques for which Tom D. has more recently become known. Extensively remastered for this release.
Audio samples.

DRAKE, BOB: Medallion Animal Carpet - CTA7 - £11
A rollercoaster of a record - intensely musical and highly attentive to the quality of sound - only not in the usual directions. This is what happens when a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist and engineer gets to do what he wants his own way, free of the norms of the musical and production values most everyone else is running after. If you think you've heard it all here's something else again. The closest to a description would be his previous CD "Little Black Train".
Audio samples.

BOB DRAKE:  The Skull Mailbox - CTA 9 - £11.00
The strangest so far. Mostly songs; a lot of acoustic instruments, a lot of unidentifiable sounds, a lot of fragments borne on a wind from somewhere else; bizarre picking interludes, humour (maybe) and snatches of incandescent playing. You can't pin this one down; it's full of twists and turns and a geometry that doesn't quite add up. Seemingly casual, there's not an ounce of fat on it, and the production - or anti-production - is, on repeated listening, quite extraordinary. Impressive.

DUMITRESCU/AVRAM /CUTLER/HODGKINSON/HYPERION ENSEMBLE:  Musique: Action ! ! - ReRE DACH1 - £11

IANCU DUMITRESCU & ANA MARIA AVRAM:  - Mysterieux-Telesma &c. - ED MN 1017 - £11.50
Objets Sonores Mysterieux (I) - for instruments and computer assisted sounds (Tim Hodgkinson, Hyperion Ensemble), Diacronies for piano (Monica Timofticiuc), Objets Sonores Mysterieux (II). Computer assisted music, Lontano - for computer assisted sounds and trombone (Victor Arsene),Telesma II - for bass clarinet , percussion and computer assisted tape (Tim Hodgkinson, Luminita Fara)

IANCU DUMITRSCU/ANA MARIA AVRAM:  Objet Sonor Mysterieux &c - EDMN 1017 - £12.00
5 new works from the dynamic duo and ensemble, two of them featuring Tim Hodgkinson as soloist. A preponderance of computer assisted sound + solo instrument pieces (solos: bass clarinet and trombone) plus some ensemble work, that sounds almost as processed.

EC NUDES, THE:  Vanishing Point - ReR N1 - £11
The (ec) nudes are: Amy Denio, Wadi Gysi and Chris Cutler (whose 1993 Tacheles appearance was voted concert of the year in Berlin). These are songs simple and complex, sometimes eccentric, widely varied. Odd arrangements and plenty of realtime playing and incorporated studio work. The whole thing was taken away and mixed by Bob Drake (Thinking Plague/Hail etc, and later a full time member of the group) in L.A. - only slightly impeded by a major earthquake. Independent music critic Amy Denio wrote on first hearing 'It's the Art Rock CD of the CENTURY'. So. Now you just have to buy it. Your ticket to pop paradise. Maybe.

ELECTROPLEINAIR SOUND DIARY:  The Wind Rises - ReR SD1 - £11
A revelation. First released in Hungary in 1987, this is an extraordinary work combining ensemble playing, documentary recording, studio manipulation, electronics and some stunning compositional conception. Featuring Marta Sebastjen, the Amaninda group, WYXOMPHONIC group, Mandel Quartet and a star gallery of other instrumentalists of all kinds. A unique work we worked years to acquire - a masterwork in every sense.

In a word, definitive.

The booklet alone can also be had (by demand I have to say) at a prohibitive £10.

FAUST:  71 Minutes of.. - ReR F1CD - £11

The Classic. Reissued.

FAUST:  You Know FaUSt - ReR F4CD - £11
Recorded and mixed by the group.

FEDER, JANET: Speak Puppet - Rer JF1 - £11
Prepared guitars and dobro, for the most part composed and all very much in Janet's own unique style - somewhere between classical, experimental and folk-picking with attitude. Which doesn’t tell you much about how listenable and strange these pieces are, but then there's no one to refer to or to compare with since Janet is really in a class of one. On some tracks she is joined, variously, by Thinking Plague guitarist Mike Johnson, Margot Krimmel (prepared harp), Mark Weber (voice) and Mike Vargas (paddlydo). This is something new.

FRITH, FRED:  The Previous Evening - ReR FF1 - £11
Written for a dance programme, this is Fred's hommage, in three pieces to the work and influence of John Cage, Earl Brown and Morton Feldman. Beautifully conceived and executed and full of minute and fascinating detail. Also an unalloyed pleasure to listen to; one of my favourites from Fred's recent output.

Electroacoustic and Tape Music. 5 great pieces: 1) For tape and 2 Percussionists, 2) for Tape and String Quartet 3) for tape and Piano (Jeffrey Burns) 4) for Tape and Drums/ Electrics (Chris Cutler). Great works of rare quality and sensitivity. Exquisite listening.

LUTZ GLANDIEN: The 5th Elephant   - ReR LG2 - £11.00
Between electroacoustic procedural precision and more recent pulse driven electronica slips this placeless new work from composer Lutz Glandien, 2 years in the making, employing material collectively generated by Lutz himself, Chris Cutler and Tuba virtuoso Michael Vogt - heavily reorganised, processed, stretched and re-assembled to make extraordinary pieces that demand - and reward - concentrated listening.

GROUND ZERO:  Plays Standards - ReR GZ3 - £11
Just when you thought it would be safe... Ground Zero are back with a CD of extraordinary covers, some are massive, others strange, all add something to their originals and were selected because of their importance to founder Otomo Yoshihide's personal musical biography - all explained in his excellent accompanying notes. Just the version of Shed a Little Tear is worth the whole CD.

GROUND ZERO:  Revolutionary Peking Opera - ReR GZ1 - £11
Otomo Yoshihide and frightening band deconstruct and rebuild the already sampled and reconstructed 'Peking Opera' of Heiner Goebbels and Alfred Harth. In conception, execution and in plain terms of aural excitement and intelligence, this is hard to beat. Stunning recording - with a drum sound to gasp at..

GROUND ZERO:  Consume Red - ReR GZ2 - £11
First Volume of a three CD project. Ground Zero makes a monster structure that starts screaming and gets more and more intense and massive until you don't imagine there is anywhere else to go. Then it gets bigger. A classic.

HAIL:  Turn of the Screw - ReR HCD - £11
An extraordinary collection of songs by Susanne Lewis and Bob Drake (of Thinking Plague). A cross between Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd and early Jefferson Airplane (best I can do). Strong, apparently simple tunes with subtle and very powerful arrangements - not shy of enveloping bass and emotional vocal delivery. Unequivocably performed, minimal and very much to the point. Perfect songs, perfectly realised. Start with 'Turn'.

HAIL:  Kirk - ReR HCD2 - £11
Second Hail CD, guests incl Chris Cutler, David Kerman, Bill Gilonis.

HENRY COW:  Leg End - ReR HC1 - £11
By public demand! First time on CD for the original mix of the album that launched a thousand careers, inspired the establishment of a number of international record companies, and built many reputations. This was the first time together on record for Fred Frith, Tim Hodgkinson, Chris Cutler, John Greaves and Geoff Leigh. An extension and fusion of the key influences of Soft Machine and Frank Zappa, the album is packed full of extraordinary tunes, complex but never pompous arrangements, and great improvisations. It defines a whole new world of European music. Those disappointed by the remixed version which originally appeared on CD will be delighted to hear the album in its original form. Repackaged with contemporary pictures and documentation. Indispensible really.

HENRY COW: Unrest - ReR HC2 - £11
Dating from 1974, and following on from the re-release of Legend, this is the second in our series of definitive reissues of the original Virgin Albums. Geoff Leigh had left the group and Lindsay Cooper joined on Bassoon, Oboe, Flute, Soprano Sax. The mix was more 'live' than Legend, with the drums much more up front. The first half is composed material, with some of the Cow's best loved tunes, like Half Asleep Half Awake and Bittern Storm Over Ulm. For the second half the material was all written in the studio, using loops, varispeed tapes and electronics, and superimposing live improvisation and composed passages. Classic, historic and still relevant, this re-issue has been carefully re-mastered with new booklet, photos and documentation.
Audio samples.

HENRY COW:   Western Culture - ReRHC4 - £11.00
Next in the classic reissue series, remastered & repackaged with expansive notes and three extra tracks (Viva Pa Ubu, Slice and Look Back (alt). I'm biased of course but I believe this was a milestone recording, perhaps the closest we came to getting the music to sound the way we wanted on disc. Audio samples.

LIMITED SPECIAL OFFER: LEGEND and UNREST If you want the earlier ESD versions (both with extra tracks and Legend also remixed) for your archive, you can have both versions of either CD for £17 the pair)

HENRY COW: In Praise of Learning - ReR HC3 - £11
ORIGINAL MIX. Remastered and with new, amplified booklet of pictures and texts. Third in the definitive series.

Four new compositions. All of 1,2 and 3 are played, real or virtual, by Tim. Composed chamber music, complex and persuasive.

ROBERT IOLINI:  Iolini - ReR RI - £11.00
Electroacoustic, Chamber Ensemble, Soundscapes and works for radio. Some will remember his two great small ensemble compositions from an earlier quarterly. This collection concentrates more on his (prize-winning) tape works and includes the great Hong Kong changeover cityscape 'In Between', extracts from works about Israeli whistleblower Mordecai Vanunu and Edwin Armstrong (inventor of FM modulation) as well as other radio works and three chamber pieces based on African rhythms. Enormous variety.

KALAHARI SURFERS:  Vol 1 The 80's - ReR KS1 - £11
Reissue on CD of the classic 'Living in the Heart of the Beast' remastered and with some tracks remixed (but all improved!), plus extra tracks and half of the LP 'Bigger Than Jesus' brilliantly incorporated. All reprogrammed as a coherent whole. Politically sharp, musically, compositionally and technically innovative; a rare mixture of simplicity, complexity, musicality and documentary imagination. A classic.

Co-released with BAHIA.

KIRALY, ERNO:  Phoenix - ReR EK1 - £11
At last a CD by this undeservedly hardly known Jugoslavian composer and performer, now in his mid seventies. 30 years ago, while doing folk music research, he dreamed of a massive electrified multi-zither. He woke up and built it and here he plays it - somewhere between Fred Frith and Keith Rowe, but from another musical world. Plus other compositions for orchestra, ensembles of various sorts, electronics and tape.
Audio samples

KOVAC, BORIS:  From Ritual Nova 1 and 2 - ReR BKCD1 - £11
Boris produced these careful and extended works over 14 years. RN 1, was only released in Jugoslavia (as was) and has long been only a collectors item. RN II was released on our POINTS EAST label. Now 70 minutes from both LP's have been assembled and remastered on one CD. This is unique and wonderful music; timely when so much insanity and horror stains the lands of its origins.

LAGOS, VENOSTA, MARIANI:  Metamorphoses (Electronic Adventures in Flamenco) - ReR LVM 1 - £11
11 pieces beautifully played by flamenco guitarist Alfredo Lagos, and then put through an electro acoustic obstacle course by Venosta and Mariani. The raw guitar is reversed, inverted, cut up, re-played, propelled by processed handclaps and swathed in delayed vocals. The large-scale hypnotic structures contrast strangely with the pristine simplicity of the original guitar pieces, and the album works as a profound meditation on culture, technology, art and authorship. Unusual, genre-bending and enjoyable.

LUSSIER, RENE/CUTLER/DEROME:  Three Pieces Suite - ReR LDCD1 - £11
Studio recordings seven years in the honing. Plus music for a film by Jacques Leduc, with guest Tom Cora. Plus part of a live performance at Sound Symposium, Newfoundland. Yes, this is the (now expanded for CD) LP promised subscribers 6 years ago. But slow mills grind fine.

MacLEAN, STEVE: Opposite of War - ReR SM1 - £11
An interesting and innovative ensemble (keyboard, bass, drums, guitar) with a chamber approach. Nothing aggressive or flashy, no electronics or noise, but carefully composed, cleanly performed pieces which play with complexity concealed inside simplicity. Outwardly simple and engaging, it holds attention through ingenious use of overlain time relations, additive rhythms and metric shifts. Subtle but very strong. Recommended.
Audio samples.

MARCLAY, CHRISTIAN:  More Encores - ReR CM1 - £11
Reissue on CD of the turntable/plunder CLASSIC, featuring Jimi Hendrix, Maria Callas, Johann Strauss, John Zorn, John Cage, Martin Denney, Fred Frith, Frederick Chopin, Louis Armstrong, Ferrante and Teicher, Birkin and Gainsbourg and CM himself...This is the big one. Digipacked. Historic. Unmissable.

MNEMONIST ORCHESTRA, THE:  Horde - ReR MO1 - £11
At last the classic Mnemonist LP made available again (the band were holding out for 24bit mastering technology). A masterpiece by the band who would later become Biota, and a wonderful example of their method of work. Up there with the first AMM as a noise classic.

MUSCI/VENOSTA:  Messages and Portraits - ReR MVCD - £11
Classic work. Overlays and constructs rhythmic and harmonic vignettes of transparent sound (at once complex and simple) from electronic, acoustic and documentary sources, taking ethnic field recordings as it's thematic centre. In the realm of 'My life in the Bush of Ghosts' but far more accomplished and developed.

MUSCI/VENOSTA:  A Noise, A Sound - ReR MVCD2 - £11
Over 2 years in the making and flawless, as usual.

ROBERTO MUSCI, CLAUDIO GABBIANI, JON ROSE, CHRIS CUTLER:  Steel Water Light - ReR RMGC - £11.00
Music made originally for three short silent films by Joris Ivens, Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler performed as part of a music and film festival in Milan; here re-mastered, edited and reorganised for listening. Hard to describe, but it straddles the ground between composed and improvised, atmospheric and graphic music, with emphasis on colour, atmosphere and structure.

THE NECKS:   Hanging Gardens - ReR Necks1 - £11.00
Completely unique, stunningly musical, technically impressive & breathtakingly simple. The Necks have defined an endlessly productive area of performance that is at once both minimal and gripping, obvious yet profoundly subtle. Easy to say, hard to achieve. It can take time for a group with a completely original idea to find its public & The Necks have been pursuing this one for over a decade in their native Australia - but it doesn't age, it just matures.

NORMA with CHRIS CUTLER:  The Harp and the Donkey - ReR NORMA1 - £11
New work in 3 parts (1) Cinema - based on the Satie piece - a chameleon of a composition that changes every few seconds. A remarkable work remarkably recorded and mixed, (2) duo pieces for samplers, turntables and such by Massimo Simonini and Tiziano Popoli, universally great and imaginative, (3) NORMA live.

OSSATURA with TIM HODGKINSON:  Dentro - ReR O1 - £11
Somewhere between Musique Concrete and a kind of abstract improvisational work, using extended techniques and electrification that disconnects sound from any recognisable source. A fascinating first record that sits between studio improvisation and extensive post production processing composition.

JOHN OSWALD:  Discosphere - ReR JOCD - £11
At present John Oswald is surely best known as the victim of the Canadian copyright commission and Michael Jackson's management - who forced the destruction last year of all pressings and masters of Oswald's extraordinary 'Plunderphonics' CD (Made and distributed free of charge with the assistance of the Arts Council of Canada). DISCOSPHERE was the first CD of John Oswald's work to be generally available, and consists of electronic, concrete, plunderphonic and electroacoustic works, written for dance projects over the last nine years.

QUATRE GUITARISTES:  World Tour - ReR GQ1 - £11
Released on LP in 1987-8 these are composed rock/contemporary/experimental pieces for electric guitar quartet and drums, complex and enegetic. Both LP's are now on one CD, omitting the Fred Frith guitar quartet extracts, which have now been released separately. Performed by: Andre Duchense, Rene Lussier, Jean-Pierre Bouchard, Roger Boudreault, Claude Fradette and guests Remi Leclerc and Ferdinand Richard.

QUATRE GUITARISTES: Fin De Siecle (vinyl) - ReR 42 - £8.30
'Fin' finds Roger replaced by Claude Fradette and Ferdinand Richard and Remi Leclerk added. These are dense Rock/Contemporary Instrumental compositions operating at a lot of borders and not much like anything else. 'Fin' includes commissioned work from Fred Frith and Lars Hollmer - and Bartok string quartet transcriptions.

RAMPOLOKENG, LESEGO:  Endbeginnings - ReR LRSCD1 - £11
Leading Black South African poet with the legendary surfers in a radical mix of rap/reggae and experimental pop. Echoes of Linton Kwesi Johnson and the Last Poets: strong reflections on the times. Clarity, engagement and art/pleasure/catharsis - rarity today.

JOCELYN ROBERT:  Folie Culture - ReR JORCD - £11
New work from JR to listen to or to not listen to; 'environmental' but very much present, this is an impossible work to categorise, but an evocative and innovative one; and to my taste a keystone of a new form.

ROSE, JON  see also misc.

ROSE, JON:  The Hyperstring Project - ReR JR6 - £11
Subtitle: The dynamic of rogue counterpoint. Jon, alone, with some of his interactive, midified, altered and invented instruments (eg the whipolin, a disembowelled cello, fitted with a variety of not exactly centred hurdy gurdy type wheels made of various materials). There's also civilian violin and midified bow without violin at all. And an automatic violin quartet for good measure. None of this tells you a lot. Hyperstring is a very intense and dense CD (we put some recovery time blank tracks in) and listening in sections is advised. Sometimes hard, it's an extraordinary document of a rare case in which processing and interactivity conspire with musical intelligence and virtuosity to evolve a genuine cyborgian artform. No shit.

ROSE, JON:  The Fence - ReR JR5 - £11
2 excellent pieces - The Fence, about borders and fences all over the world, using very long amplified strings and documentary voices; a serious and substantial work. Bagni di Dolabella, "a violinists guide to the treatments and political intrigues of an ancient roman bath" - featuring the orchestra of ancient guts. Both originally made for radio.

ROSE, JON:  Violin Music for Restaurants - ReR BJRCD - £11
'Violin', a Radio work based on Jo 'Doc' Rosenberg's 'BOO' theory - songlines applied to restaurant tables. Includes theatre, noise, golden 4th dimension standards, vox humana and help from Derek Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne, Alvin Curran, Luc Houtkamp, Joelle Leandre, Misha Mengelberg, Barre Phillipsinter alia.

ROSE, JON:  Brainweather - ReR BJRCD2 - £11
'Brain' is a CD musi-drama (opera pervers) with El Maestro JR lui-meme, Shelley Hirsch, Phil Minton, a Nietschean dentist and thousands of Rosenbergs. Plus The Weatherman. Full texts and notes. Cover by Peter Blegvad.

ROSE, JON:  Perks - ReR JR3 - £11
Jon's latest and, I think, best studio production- an interactive Badminton Game where the two sides of the court are the left and right hemispheres of Australian composer, improviser, eccentric and keen sportsman's brain. A whirlwind of playing, samples, speech, grippingly organised and musically a step ahead. Nice work

ROSE, JON:  Shopping Live@Victo - ReR JR4 - £11
Yes, we're still shopping - this is an unexpurgated copy of the Victoriaville concert (Radio recording) with group: Lauren Newton, Joelle Leandre, Otomo Yoshihide and Chris Cutler. In my opinion the wildest and most dizzying version on record. Unfolding chaos with luminous performances - viz, Lauren's hair-raising interpretations and vocal event, Joelle's oscar-winning bag lady performance, THE CAST for maintaining an atmosphere of knife-edge confusion. All human life and a whole lot of other stuff too. High quality radio recording with nothing cut or edited - nightmarish, and funny. Glad I was there.

SUN RA:  Cosmo-Sun Connection - ReR SR1 - £11
A CD containing the limited edition Recommended LP release that has been out of print for the last 12 years - though much in demand, since it comprehensively covers the diversity of the Arkestra's work - via Africa, through Ellington and all the way on to Pure Electronics. Given to us by Ra over a decade ago, we intend to apply the royalties of this re-release directly to the Arkestra. A Classic.

TICKMAYER FORMATIO:  Wilhelm Dances - ReR TFCD - £11
Substantial new work from Stevan Tickmayer, recorded at IRCAM in Paris. Wide-ranging compositions excellently performed. Some Louis Andreissen echoes, Zorn-cuts, generic leaps, lyricism and much variety.

VEES, JACK:  The Restaurant Behind the Pier - ReR JV1 - £11
Seven pieces for solo bass. Sounds unappetising? Well. This may be what it is, but it isn't always what it sounds like: to bass, add a lot of pedals and extended techniques, add sound on sound and a mastery of harmonics; to solos add versions of rock classics (Manic Depression - I Want You and As you said) as well as more abstract compositions and electoacoustics. Best known as a Bang on a Can composer, Jack played a lot of rock music in his life. Identity crisis? Postmodern condition? At least he's turning it into art. Not for everyone maybe, but an important work for bass.

VOGT, MICHAEL:  Tuba Intim - ReR TUBA1 - £11
Contemporary music for tuba and a revelation of an under-utilised musical voice. For stretched and traditional techniques. Includes works by Lutz Glandien (Tuba and Tape), Morton Feldman, Igor Stravinsky and Michael himself. Listenable and unusual.

VRTACEK, CHARLES:  Heaven Comes To Town (vinyl) - ReR 39 - £8.30
Side one sucessfully essays a fascinating project - to invoke a half-distracted internal world moving within, and sometimes responsive to, a half-heard external world. Snatches of melody, echoing a kind of stream-of- consciousness, emerge from and sink into documentary sound which runs parallel with it. Not random but embodying a complex and subtle aesthetic. Side 2 consists of pieces, mostly for piano and guitar, that stretch into silence but wholly absorb. Zen, Satie, Hitchcock...

WHEN:  Black, White and Grey - ReR WHCD - £11
A complete new work plus 'Death In The Blue Lake'. Combines playing and through-composition with manipulated and environmental sound in dramatic, narrative, psychological constructions. Quite unique. 'Death' based on a novel; texts in new works by Chris Cutler. Book of artwork.
Audio samples.

ZGA:  Zgamoniums - ReR ZGACD - £11
New works from the extraordinary Rigan Quartet; sound bites from 'real' and electrified scrapyard instruments; an indescribable and incomparable group who have succeeded both in defying genre and creating radically new sounds.

ZGA:  End of an Epoch - ReR ZGACD2 - £11
'Epoch' is more compositionally developed. Prodigious.

ZGA:  Sub Luna Morrior - ReR ZGA3 - £11
Latest recording by the ever deeper Russian instrument builders and masters of live electroacoustic/song/sound sculptures. Dangerous, Bitter, Desperate and Down to the Bone, but carrying a huge emotional charge and a rare beauty. This is lived music, both mature and profound.
Audio Samples

ZNR:  Barricades 3 - ReR ZNR1 - £11
The legendary first LP reissued. One of the more extraordinary groups of all time, bizarre, minimal, satiesque, les six and Brasilian echoes, clear as crystal, completely impenetrable, innocent and ironic. There never was before, nor has been ever again anything quite like it.
