An interesting addition to the series. Disc one features Ives’ prescient and (very) quietly iconoclastic Central Park in the Dark (1906), Leo Ornstein’s explosive Suicide in an Airplane (1913), Henry Cowell’s Dynamic Motion (1916) performed by the composer, George Antheil’s Sonata Sauvage (1922/3) and his Ballet Mechanique (1924), a 1955 recording, Carl Ruggles’ Angels (1922), Dane Rudhyar’s Tetragram #8 (1928), Edgard Varese’s indispensible Ionisation (1929-31), Roger Sessions’ From my Diary (1940) and Morton Feldman’s groundbreaking Piece for 4 pianos (1957) – a 1959 recording with Feldman himself playing one of the pianos. CD 2 is occupied mainly with John Cage’s 66 minute Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano (1946-48), premiered in 1949 by Maro Ajemian; He made this recording the following year. The CD closes with Harry Parch’s rarely heard Ulysses at the Edge (1955) – the only work in which he uses saxophones (alongside his usual orchestra of invented instruments) – and Brian Gysin’s 1960 tape cut-up piece Recalling all Agents. Nice design and artwork, useful accompanying book with photos and lengthy commentaries on the composers.
