RILEY, TERRY: Keyboard Studies
These are masterful recordings of some of Terry Riley’s seminal works, performed by the great John Tilbury, ‘sometime in the late 1970s or early ‘80s’.The compositions themselves date from 1964-65 and are: Dorian Reeds, which Tilbury plays on an electric organ, Keyboard Study No. 1, which he plays on piano and Keyboard Study No. 2, which is a 30 minute epic piling up piano, electric organ, harpsichord and celeste, all overdubbed by John in this remarkable recording session. An invaluable addition to the public record and a highly enjoyable one to boot. I’m generally a minimalism sceptic, but there are exceptions.
