FRITH, FRED, HUMBERT, NICHOLAS, PARISOTTO, MARC: Cut up the Border
Cut up the Border [£14.50] ROG 0098
Out of some 33 hours of sound recordings, accrued between 1989 and 1990 in the making of the 90-minute Step Across the Border, our three protagonists cut and pasted this montage out of interviews, snatched environmental recordings, gigs, bystanders, musical performances, rehearsals, fragments, phone calls, musings and tapes left rolling. An enormous number of people drift (unidentifiedly) in and out, including (apart from Fred) Tom Cora, Iva Bittova, Haco, Ted Milton, John Zorn, Pavel Fajt, the photographer Robert Frank and experimental film-maker Jonas Mekas. A free associating sleeve-note by Paulo Podresu doesn’t tell you much but Nicholas and Marc write something about their motivation and process and Fred identifies the assemblage’s personal affect as wormholes into the past. If you know the film well, this will augment it; but as a standalone experience, it’s abstract art and must rely on the ear and narrative brain of the behearer.
