ELODIE LAUTEN: The Death of Don Juan.
A largely forgotten, minimal, but not remotely obvious, classic by the French composer and long-time New Yorker, Elodie Lauten. Billed as an opera in 2 acts although there is virtually no singing in it – and such as there is fragmented and delivered by normal, rather than operatic, voices – this is a rich tumbling river of exquisite sounds made by amplified harpsichords, electric guitar, cello, electro-acoustic lyre, Fairlight synthesiser, trombone, and two voices – all sparingly employed and to great effect. I have no idea why this highly original and unusual work has been so overlooked, but luckily there is this fine recording. With excellent accompanying documentation, but in short supply. Highly recommended.
