DON PRESTON: Filters, Oscillators and Envelopes
Parallel with his legendary troublemaking with the classic Mothers of Invention lineup, Don Preston was working in downtime with his home-made synthesiser on the first of these pieces, Electronic Music – an abstract, nicely crafted ‘60s electronic composition. In the mid ‘70s, after acquiring a modular Moog synthesiser he started work on his second solo recording, a seven-part suite, Analogue Heaven, for Moog and Mini Moog. Subtler, greater complexity and richer sonorities. The third piece, Fred and Me, dates from 1982 when he added collected percussion, played by Fred Stofflet, to the electronics: railroad cleats, leaf springs and assorted chunks of metal. Another missing page of history reinserted.
