MUSICA ELETTRONICA VIVA: Symphony No. 106
Original members Frederick Rzweski, Richard Teitelbaum and Alvin Curran reconvened last year to do several concerts, of which this was one Ė at the Victoriaville festival in Canada. Fred sticks to the piano, the other two use keyboards and samplers and the result is as aurally eclectic as youíd probably expect from these pioneers of scrap, electronics, and radical experimentation. But that was the early Ď60s; itís not so easy to annoy the critics or the public any more; thatís a bus that left long ago. However you will have a stimulating, unexpected and safe ride with these well-seasoned troublemakers (collective age 236) who manage to keep it sharp through an unhurried hour of invention, collage and (mostly) good musical decisions. Like AMM, with whom they have long been associated, MEV have their feet on very solid ground, so they donít need to strive for effect, just do what they do.
