ROSE, JON: The Music of Place.
76pp paperback flat bound book. Small edition published in Australia, of which we were able to obtain a handful of copies. From the Platform Papers series, the closest we get in these dire times to an intellectual cultural platform. An important essay about the place of music in a culture that has ceased to care. Not pulling a lot punches and calling a spade a bloody shovel, Jon tells us what we need to know even if we can’t be bothered to listen. It’s a short (76pp), stimulating and unacademic read that in another time and place would cause a fluttering in the dovecotes and some serious debate, written by someone who still gives a damn, and has practical suggestions to make. Essential reading.
