DUNAWAY, JUDY: Mother of Balloon Music
DUNAWAY, JUDY: Mother of Balloon Music
Judy has been playing balloons for over a quarter of a century. The practice has a long, if generally undocumented history. Balloons were played in vaudeville at the end of the C19 and were popular with elements of the New Music avant garde in the 1960s. Judy has raised the stakes with this CD. There are 6 pieces here: Two impressive improvisations with violinist Tom Chiu; two compositions - one for string quartet and balloon and one for Bass Koto and balloon(s); and two studio assemblies - with multiple balloons and treatments. How much can you do with a balloon? You’d be surprised. Some echoes of Gloria Coates, lot’s of glissandi, high-quality recordings. This is an enlightenment. And a curiosity. But It’s not at all frivolous or gimmicky; these are proper compositions and don’t waste time. And they will surprise you; it’s not all what you expect – and some of it is downright mysterious. Chapeau.
