JOHN CAGE: Shock Vol 2
In October 1962 John Cage and David Tudor went to Japan to present a series of historic concerts. These are invaluable recordings, not least because they aren’t of selected repertoire reconsidered in tranquility but capture all the atmosphere of a time when all this was new and highly radical. And it’s a fine programme - played by the best exponents. Volume 2 contains Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Klavierstucke 10 performed by David Tudor and John Cage’s 26’55.988 for 2 pianists and a string player (David Tudor, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Kenjo Kobayashi, with Yoko Ono adding some characteristic vocalising). There’s some very radical amplification (and maybe treatment) going on too, to judge by the recording. It’s a really wild piece. Comes in a nicely packaged double-fold card sleeve, with fine pictures, and notes.
