CRAIG SCOTT'S LOBOTOMY: War is a Racket.
CRAIG SCOTT'S LOBOTOMY: War is a Racket.
Put the name aside; humour is often a cover for things that for one reason or another donít want quite to declare themselves for what they are (and sometimes, of course, itís just humour) but Iím wasting your time. This is a moderately extraordinary record, with no obvious analogues; itís very dense, but light and full of air; all the sounds are clear and well integrated, but the overall shape is hazy, protean; compositionally it moves fast (as bob drake and john zorn can) and thereís biota-like attention to sound and to layered, processed free-time tentacular structure; like Biota too, itís built with instruments (basses, horns, keyboards, guitars, accordion, tabla, steel pans, now and then a voice) but they donít often sound much like what they are; the content skips from abstraction to close composition without warning and spends a lot of time in a semantic no-mans-land, adding to a sonic cauldron of chaos out of which slippy themes and future compositions emerge apparently at hazard; short attention span is a feature, and yet over long stretches there seems to be some guiding morphology. In short, itís a puzzle, impenetrable as the best of improvisation but clearly carefully Ė very carefully Ė put together, with an enormous amount of post-production work. To say unique in this case would be proper. I can strongly recommend anyone with a liberal, investigative, bent to buy this - self-produced Ė CD. The silly name aside, itís not messing about.
