MUKAIYAMA, TOMOKO: Hello Pop Tart
A collection of contemporary piano pieces (except for the title track). Works by Henry Cowell, Charles Ives (an unpublished score of Celestial Railroad), William Bolcom, John Zorn, Frank Zappa and Fred Rzewski, well chosen and excellently performed. Altogether a fine CD. Except for the title track. I have no idea what it's doing here. Tomoko Mukaiyama merely sings - and she's no singer, nor can you really understand the sub Zappa text she approximates (it is printed on the strange plastic fold out sleeve). The music is risible, the performers uncredited. Mysterious. Sensibly the track only take up 4 minutes and is at the end of the CD so you can skip it. Highly peculiar, ungainly packaging. Still worth it for the piano music.
