ANDREYEV, SAMUEL: The Tubular West
This is a CD out of step, but that cant be ignored; it has quiet ambition and its inspirations (Van Dyke Parks, the Beach Boys, ancient and contemporary music) are not taken in vain. Variously orchestrated with keyboards of all sorts - acoustic, vintage and electronic -, oboe, English horn, heckelphone, piccolo, bass and alto flutes, violin, cello, baritone sax, vibraphone, bass, dronebox, drums, and various percussive objects - you begin to get the picture. A Canadian now living in France, hes trained at the conservatory and IRCAM - and by the likes of Ferneyhaugh, Holliger & Saunders, but wears it lightly in this eccentric collection of unusual and curiously orchestrated songs. One of a kind, not flashy but full of fascinating and imaginative detail. And odd, decidedly odd.
