G.F. FITZGERALD & LOL COXHILL: The Poppy Seed Affair (2CD and DVD set)
A handful of this now permanently out of print numbered edition have shown up. First come first served, I’m afraid. The 30 minute mini-feature film that forms the centre of this release was made in1981 by ‘60’s/70s zeitgeist troublemakers Ian Hinchcliffe, Jeff Nuttall, Mark Long, Gerry FitzGerald, Lol Coxhill & Foxy. The soundtrack was the work of Lol Coxhill – sometimes part of a trio with drummer Robert Wyatt (who also contributes a passable chicken imitation) and (Kevin Ayers’) bassist Archie Leggett. Nuttall is excellent as the narrator, after the portentous style of Edgar Lustgarten, of a sordid tale of treachery and murder. The others ham it up outrageously. Then there are two CDs mastered directly from rare recordings from the Fitzgerald archives. The first is a close-miked concert recording of his duo with Lol at Newcastle’s Spectro Arts Workshop in 1981. The second collects tape pieces, starting with Listen Collage, reconstructing, in Faust Tapes style, random room recordings: bedroom radios, tape recorders and ambient street sounds from London’s Ladbroke Grove in the spring of 1969 – an invaluable window on time much written about but audially lost. Then there are two extended works for prepared guitars and effects ending in the sample-loop Band In My Head. And, to close, a tape collage made for The Matchbox Purveyors’ stage show: The Team. In a numbered limited edition of 500 copies. NTSC - all region.
