SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE: Withdrawal
Historic recordings from 1966, 35 minutes of which were originally made for a film that was eventually never made, another 25 of re-workings of that material that went unreleased for over 30 years, and 25 of ‘Seeing Sounds and Hearing Colours', a suite inspired by Webern’s 5 pieces for Orchestra, all played by an SME by this time virtually free of any trace of jazz, made up of John Stevens, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Rutherford, Trevor Watts and new boys Barry Guy and Evan Parker. Derek Bailey joins them all for the second two blocks - two of his earliest free improvising recordings. Excellent sleeve notes by hero of the revolution Martin Davidson, the tireless toiler behind this exemplary label. Good quality studio recordings. Exceptional music. L
