DEBUSSY, SATIE, APOLLINAIRE, DUCHAMP, RIBEMONT-DESSAIGNES, ARP, PICABIA, HONNEGER, DESNOS, LES SIX,
A useful collection. The recordings of Apollinare (1913), Arp (1961), Cocteau (1929) and Desnos (1938) are all of short contemporary recordings of the artists reciting their own verse – Cocteau accompanied by the Dan Parrish Jazz Orchestra and Desnos as part of a very early radio experiment that uses voices, sound effects and snatches of music to create a mobile dreamscape. Both recordings of inestimable value to the sound historian. Pianos are prominent throughout, though Pacific 321 (in an excellent but unattributed recording) is for orchestra, Boulez’s Sonatine for piano and flute and, of course, Schaeffer, Henry and Varese’s works are all classics of Musique Concrete - synthesised and sampled sound can never achieve such grain and character as this. I should make special mention here of the lesser–-known Le Nombril interlope, by Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes for it’s overwhelming counterintuitivity, Olivier Grieff’s larger-than-life tribute to Raymond Roussel (a world premiere recording, beautifully played), Jean Catoire’s compelling Opus 145 and Philippe Hersant’s desolate, episodic but gripping La Lande. As always with this series, the design and the content of the generous booklet is exemplary. L
