SOUNDING THE BODY ELECTRIC: Experiments in Art and Music in eastern Europe (double CD)
SOUNDING THE BODY ELECTRIC: Experiments in Art and Music in eastern Europe (double CD)
Drawn from the 2012 exhibition of the same name in Lodz, which brought together some of the more radical - but not clandestine – experiments conducted in East Europe through the ‘60s and ‘70’s (Norwegian Arne Nordheim seems to be here because his piece was recorded in the Polish Radio Experimental studio in1968), featuring Vladan Radovanovic’s Voice from the Loudspeaker, 1975 - a text piece that plays games with a loudspeaker [English text version]; Szabolcs Esttenyi and Krysztof Wodiczko’s Just Transistor Radios,1970 - a Cagean composition for 8 radios tuned, adjusted and shaken according to a score, by performers wearing earplugs; Vojciech Bruszewski’sJunction, 1973 – with microphones hung at a traffic junction and beamed into the gallery; Collective Actions’ Music within and Outside, 1984 – a Russian neo-avant garde troupe performing with noise and field recordings of trams; Eugeniusz Rudnik’s Scholars- technological Study, 1966 – a live tape recorder manipulation in classic electronic music style; Hugh Davis’ Shozyg, 1964 – a collective radio studio improvisation using a variety of home- made electronic instruments; Rudolph Komorous’s Tomb of Malevich, 1965 - classic early Czech electronic music; Arne Nordheim’s Ode to Light - for a 19.5 metre sculpture using 28 distributed loudspeakers – a very nice work, in 2 versions: the original and a recent, very persuasive, remix by Eugeniusz Rudnik; Milan Grygar’s Acoustic Drawings - small sounds of objects and actions; recordings of the making of the drawings, and some quiet percussion recorded live at the opening of the exhibition of the drawings in 1974. There’s also a book with pictures and (quasi-informative but incomplete) information in Polish and English. An important document and an historical corrective. L
