GORDON MONAHAN: Seeing Sound. Sound art, performance and music 1978-2011 (Book and DVD)
160pp Hardback art publication documenting Monahan’s work over 33 years with two articles on his work, an interview (by Matthias Osterwald), and a bibliography. Monahan is a builder, inventor, composer and something of a showman. He likes physical objects that sound, animating them by natural and elemental forces, human effort and mechanical energy or, in the case of the Sauerkraut Synthesiser, fruit and vegetables. The DVD, shows extracts from 14 installations and performances: Speaker Swinging, A Magnet that Speaks also Attracts, Long Aolian Piano, Aqueolian Whirlpool, Aqueolian Music Room, Sounds and the Machines that make them, When it Rains, New and Used Furniture Music, Aolian winds over Claybank, Theremin Pendulum, Syncopated precipitation, Space becomes the Instrument, Sauerkraut Synthesiser and Spontaneously Harmonic in Certain kinds of Weather. Dramatic, extraordinary, imaginative, strange, impressive… these would be appropriate adjectives. 160pp, with a lot of photographs. Text in English, German and French.
