MUSICWORKS 85: Magazine and CD
This is one of the only serious English language publications dealing with sound art and experimental music. Issue 85 contains useful and thorough articles on Gordon Monahan’s installations, Ellen Fullman’s Long String Instrument, Tim Brady’s Guitar Orchestra, Richard Teitelbaum (an overview), sound objects and verbal art from Mark Sutherland (in Magritte territory) and reviews of new music festivals, concerts and selected CDs, while the CD features substantial pieces by Monahan, Fullman, Sutherland (a couple of gems here), Teitelbaum (one for him and Steve Lacy, one for 24 Buddhist monks, one for 3 pianos – an upright linked through computers to two digitally controlled others) and Brady (contrasting his studio work on ’20 Quarter Inch Jacks’ (see Brady elsewhere in this catalogue) with the live versions of the same sections. Altogether a pretty indispensable issue.
