DOCKSTADER, TOD: From the Archives
A legendary figure in American Musique Concrete and a maverick outsider, unattached to the institutions and untroubled by doctrine or peer pressure, Dockstader released only a handful of records between 1961-66 – all exceptional – before moving into to the film world. But of course he continued to work. In the 1990s Starkland reissued several of the old releases, and ReR released another, as well as two new collaborations with David Myers. Sub Rosa released Ariel a trilogy of new pieces. Tod had resumed work. Now though he was using computers rather than tape. A few years later, illness overtook him and ceased to work. He died at 83, in 2005, leaving thousands of files, fragments, short pieces and works-in-progress on his computer. This painstaking compilation was made from these fragments by Justin Brierly.
