SELFISH, BING and the MULTIVERTS: in the morning we glow and in the evening we glow again
SELFISH, BING and the MULTIVERTS: in the morning we glow and in the evening we glow again
Bing, the unstoppable text machine, with another cult hit on his hands. Lots of proper songs properly played, nicely arranged and full of ideas - but infused with a self-reflexivity and generic complexity that makes any coherent assessment difficult; there’s an infinite regress of referentiality, as I’m sure Mr. Bing won’t mind me saying, that throws the sharpest critic into a tizzy fugue. When asked near the end of his life what he considered his greatest achievement, Andy Warhol is supposed to have said ‘Keeping a straight face’. For example, The Unbearable Lightness of Bing would have been a hit in 1967, except it couldn’t have been written in 1967 because then it would have been what is and not about what it is… you’d need a time machine and then…see what I mean? I hope that’s clear. Engineered by Bob Drake, who also plays drums throughout.
