THE KEITH TIPPETT OCTET: The Nine Dances of Patrick O’Gonogon
THE KEITH TIPPETT OCTET: The Nine Dances of Patrick O’Gonogon
Recorded in 2014, this is a large-scale late work by one of music’s rōnin masters; impregnable compositions beautifully executed through a happy confluence of the best of the history of British jazz - from Stan Tracey and Joe Harriott, through Centipede - absorbing en route various strands of rock and the classic big bands. The result is this ageless progression of perfectly calibrated, Irish-tinged musical tableaux in which the band and the music become indistinguishable, their composed and extemporized limbs invisibly entwined. Folklore is hard to approach formally or lightly, or from the outside, but Tippett seems to have managed it, helped by some great musicians who don’t preen, and unintrusively skillful recording and mixing. Julie Tippets makes her appearance at exactly the right moment and signals the final reveal in which time is reversed and all debts are paid. Or so I read it.  A great project than never puts a foot wrong.
