KRAUZE, ZYGMUNT: Hommage a Strzeminsky
A showcase for Krauze’s highly distinctive compositional method inspired, he says, by the painter Wladyslaw Strzeminsky, in which – against all the orthodoxies of the new music of the day – all the material to be used is introduced at the beginning of the work, which then proceeds inventively, but without new material and deliberately avoiding marked or unexpected contrasts to its end. It’s a species of minimalism, but not in the form with which we are familiar. His harmonic spectrum is saturated with overtones, microtones and dissonance and the structures are episodic - but extra-temporal, constantly changing in colour, detail and articulation, while avoiding both forward movement or development.
