GOSFIELD, ANNIE: Burnt Ivory and Loose Wires
Another classic. Working with altered and detuned instruments, this pits microtonality against equal temperament, close writing against improvisation, traditional against extended techniques. The sounds are massive and glorious (though I have to admit IÕm a sucker for detuning a particularly interesting kind of tuning) and Annie as usual works very intelligently with all the possibilities, while keeping the raw physicality of the sound and working with rhythm like a drummer, not a composer. Mostly played by herself (samples), Roger Keier (electric guitar) and percussionists Jim Pugliese and Christine Bard, these are great pieces, wholly convincing, completely outside any easy genre typing. Excellent notes, nice package.
