SCOTT, RAYMOND: Kodachrome – Compositions for Orchestra
SCOTT, RAYMOND: Kodachrome – Compositions for Orchestra
A selection of Scott’s compositions played by the Dutch Metropole Orchestra (half a classical orchestra and half a big-band jazz ensemble, some 50 strong - you’ll remember their perfect renditions of Juan Esquivel‘s work a couple of years back at this same address). All these selections are meticulously arranged, though in a loose, jazz spirit; some are pretty tricky - and most come in under three minutes (some under two) - during which they nevertheless cover plenty of ground. The excellent sleeve-notes draw a parallel with Leroy Andersen, which is just, though Scott is more untamed and eccentric. The Metropole does a fine job of picking out the nuances in Scott’s genre-slipping vocabulary and neither modernise nor pretend to be a period ensemble. Egyptian Summer, Naked City and Confusion Among a Fleet of Taxicabs Upon Meeting With a Fare stand out, but it’s a solid collection that brings back a little of a once ubiquitous musical form that mixed high imaginative values, technical skill and popular musical vocabulary to entertain intelligently.
