JEAN DUBUFFET & ILHAN MIRAMOGLU: Coucou Bazar (Dbl CD).
A fascinating release that presents two scores for Jean Dubuffet’s animated painting spectacle Coucou Bazar. The first, realised in the now legendary Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Centre in 1973 by the truly great Turkish composer Ilhan Miramoglu. is a classic of the genre, and indeed of the era: these are exquisite sounds, beautifully articulated; organic and addictive. CD two offers a score compiled by choreographer Anna Sagna using recordings made by Dubuffet himself between 1961-74. These were early experiments with tape-recorders and improvisation, closely related to the French poesie sonore – in other words confections of abstract noise made with a wide variety of often unidentifiable instruments and a great deal of tape manipulation. This is a fascinating document falling into no obvious camp. Nicely packaged with full notes and excellent pictures taken from the Coucou performance. L
