What is in this catalogue and why:
ReR was set up in 1978 as an independent label and distribution service. The idea was to find and make available recordings from around the world (on numerous independent and specialist labels,
including some rare and hard to find limited editions) which, in my opinion, embodied the most interesting, experimental or important work in the musical field I cared about. I have tried to explain
my choices in the notes to each selection. If there is no description, it means that we distribute them - for reasons of solidarity, broad interest, public demand - but I can not specifically
personally recommend them. ReR is more personal than democratic, more a service than a business.
Why it's laid out the way it is:
Bob Drake spent too much of his life working on the first version of this new site -
which looked great - but it was essential to get some kind of
online shopping cart and this, we discovered, is not so simple. So, eventually, no shopping cart but a viable online ordering system -
thanks to
Phil Zampino at Squidco - and a layout by Bob that makes maintenance practical.
Hence the appearance of each title by one artist listed separately instead of under one heading, and hence too the rather austere
layout. But I guess in this case practical is better than beautiful but impractical. However, suggestions are definitely welcomed.
More about the "shopping cart":
To buy or rent a shopping cart system is prohibitive, and without one the site is not practical. This way online ordering is still possible, with a minimum of inconvenience. Copy and paste is easy.
And you don't have to add up the amounts if you'd rather not - we have to do that anyway, so in the end it's as simple as the complicated system, I hope.
Credit card security:
Credit card security is fatally compromised every time you give your card or it's number to anyone - just to put any worry about email interception into perspective. If someone goes on a shopping
spree with your number, the card company has to cover for it, not you - that's why they hit you up for all that interest and why they charge us a percentage on every transaction. If the goods are
going to the address of the cardholder, it should be ok. However if you are worried, print and mail the order, or send the credit card details in two emails.
