  FRITH. FRED: Speechless
Code:ReRFRO04
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
After Gravity, where he worked with The Muffins and Samla Mammas Manna, this was FredÕs second solo release for The ResidentsÕ Ralph Records, this time working with French RIO band Etron Fou Leloublan - notably their drummer, Gigou Chenevier, who makes a major musical and aesthetic contribution to the character and atmosphere of these recordings. Here are clear, melodic, through composed pieces that both hold to the Folk/Rock vocabularies explored on Gravity and continue the exploration of territory opened up on Hopes and FearsÕ ÔMoeris DancingÕ. These tracks drive and rock and swing; they are tense and dense and often dramatic. Environmental recordings of FredÕs New York environment also colour the mix. And listen out for SatieÕs typewriter..

  FUKI, TARA: Kapka
Code:MAM214-2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
New CD by Andrea and Dorota, the usual mixture - singing and dual cellos, inevitably a bit bittova-esque but rather ambitiously produced this time; less of the simple charm and more weight, a development which is curiously distancing to my ear. It's hard to fault but less easy to like.

  FULLMAN, ELLEN: Staggered Stasis
Code:NOM29
Price: £12.00
Quantity in Basket: none
* Famous for her long string drone pieces. These drones sweep through overtones and the natural harmonics, if you really concentrate; or make a soothing background noise, if you don't. Otherwise they are staggeringly boring. This is only for those who already like drones. For them these are highly evolved, focused drones that home in on specific harmonic relations.

FULLMAN,ELLEN, TAKEHISA KOSUGI, MARIO VERANDI, FAST FORWARD, OLGA NEUWIRTH, HORATIO VAGGIONE: Zeite
Code:Parallele20002
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Fullman: her celebrated long string instruments plus oboe multiphonics; Vaggione, tape and contrabasse flute (unconventional techniques); Fast Forward, a nice faux Japanese tape-piece and, with Kosugi, a performance with violin, steel pans and other metal percs; Verandi, for water and a plastic bottle; Neuwirth for 3 Percussionists and live electronics - a long and substantial work

  FURT: Defkt
Code:mrcd50
Price: £14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
Hard to categorise, but the intentionality and attention to detail ,as well as the predominating aesthetic seem to want it to be here. Furt is Richard Barrett and Paul Obermayer, both of whom are credited with electronics (samples, studio) but who work under compositional rules and imperatives. The first piece is made from piano material generated by the duo on pianos and later reworked in a studio. The second is derived from The Winterreise a very concise and hallucinogenic tumble down a rabbit-hole. With plundering. The third, Volkmusic, is provocative politics, performed near Vienna during the Haider ascendancy: more plunder, some ridicule, a fair bit of oompah, modernity and dissonance, beautifully assembled and featuring adolf chaplin on vocals. Uncomfortable for that audience I think. The last, long piece is more demanding and requires quiet and time. An excellent CD.

  FURUTA MARI: Crossing There
Code:CORart001
Price: £15.57
Quantity in Basket: none
Four excellent pieces from a Japanese composer and performer who moves happily from one world to another; she is a member of the fine Bidziliba and of Otomo Yoshihide's Cathode but here she presents more formal compositions - for environmental sound and percussion ensemble; for flute, oboe and marimba (slightly reminiscent of Ravel); for three guitars (a beautiful piece employing sparse playing, dissonant tuning, interference patterns, as she says 'like ripples...confirming the reality of their existence'; and for bass marimba and vibraphone (faster, denser but also forming a slow spreading pattern). A fine CD showing again that

Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none

  GABBIANI, CLAUDIO: Nightnursing
Code:GABBIANI,CLAUDIO:Nightnursing
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Guitar, Computer, Violin, Drums, Electronics. Primarily the work of composer Claudio G. but with contributions from Roberto Musci, Jon Rose and Chris Cutler, this is an excellent collection of rich and often strange - even exotic - sample and computer manipulated material. At once complex and coherent, simple and focussed, it is delicately realised. Another one of those hard to define musical half-way houses, where all manner of disparate elements somehow meet and manage successfully to converge.

GABER, HARLEY: The Winds Rise in the North (dbl CD)
Code:EDRZ4008-9
Price: £21.74
Quantity in Basket: none
For 3 violins, viola and cello this long, still, rather agonising work modulates very slowly over a long time. Geber says in his reflective sleeve-notes ' the piece is about gutting myself emotionally'. It explores quiet, demanding playing (of long tones), very close-mic'd - to pick up every falter and detail, and can be listen to as background or foreground to very different effect. Not for everyone; this is a demanding and somewhat excruciating composition (and performance); but it has integrity.

GABURO, KENNETH: 5 works for voices, instruments and electronics
Code:80582-2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A varied collection; pieces for voice, piccolo, bass trombone, double bass and electronics; string quartet; solo trumpet (an extraordinary work, six contrapuntal lines sung into the instrument); small choir and electronics; three voices (singing one note for 23 minutes).

  GABURO, KENNETH: Maledetto, Antiphony VIII
Code:P21047-2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Pioneer of electronic music, compositional linguistics, and founder of the New Music Choral Ensemble and Lingua Press, Gaburo has spent his life experimenting with language-as-music and music-as-language. The two pieces featured here are the 1967-9 Maledetto, a remarkable, high-octane vocal theatre piece for 7 speakers centred on the word screw' in all its connotations, and Antiphony, for tape and percussion - a strongly theatrical piece for percussionist and tape. A rare recoding by Gaburo, whose work is generally underrepresented even today.

GANELIN CHEKASIN TARASOV: Golden years of the Soviet New Jazz Vol IV
Code:GY413/416
Price: £29.38
Quantity in Basket: none
(4CD set - limited 750 Edn) We all owe a lot to Leo Feigin, who has tirelessly recovered, reissued and restored an amazing musical archive from the old Soviet Union. What was happening there was quite as remarkable as anything happening in the easy West, but without major labels, press hype and appearances few names have stuck. Here are 4 CDs devoted to members of the Ganelin Trio, all recorded in the 1980's. On the first 2 CD's they work in pairs - this is world class material, as genre free and imaginative and original as anything from the period; these guys were as far off the map and, if anything, freer than many; unhampered by the 'forbidden' vocabularies of melody, style and rhythm and incorporating - very much ahead of the game - multiple languages and crossed genres more associated with Zorn, even Oswald. Note the extraordinary use of electronic keyboards on the Le Mans recording. This box is worth it just for these 2 CDs. CD 3: 'sketches of everyday life' by Chekasin's quartet starts radical but settles into more of a crowd pleaser - a tour de force, but finally giving the jazz public a stomping show. Finally two early '80's shows by the Ganelin trio itself.

  GANELIN TRIO, THE: Con Affetto
Code:GY2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Ganelin were a Rolls Royce of a group, covering the ground between sound improvisation, fringe contemporary music and jazz. Profoundly European they nevertheless developed their own musical language (they had to, as Russians they were not swimming in the open pool). This is a whole concert, very organised, moving from idea to idea easily and in depth, which covers a great deal of ground. Engaging, very listenable, impressive. This was an important group and this is a fine document.

GANELIN TRIO: Con Anima. Concerto Grosso
Code:GY15
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Studio recordings of the classic trio from the second half of the '70's. A uniquely Russian take on free playing. Free meaning that melody and rhythm were allowed as well as sound abstraction, intelligence as well as energy.

GANN, KYLE: Nude Rolling down an Escalator
Code:80633
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Gann, composer and author of 'The Music of Conlon Nancarrow' here uses MIDI and the Disklavier to work through his own original and highly imaginative approach to the mechanical piano, in these pieces tackling not only rhythmic and polyphonic possibilities - like Nancarrow himself - but also mictrotonality and alternative tunings. Though all the pieces are fiendishly and impossibly complex, they are also easy to listen to - by turn, breathtaking, witty and intelligent. They mostly draw on Jazz, Blues, Folk and popular music forms, though in vastly alien configurations, and each works around a strong central idea. For instance: 'Petty Larceny' is all made from fragments of Beethoven piano sonatas, 'Bud Ran Back Out' references Bud Powell, but in multiple times and at impossible speeds over a walking Bass, 'Despotic Waltz' puts regular Nancarrow in the Left hand and rubato Chopin in the right, 'Folk Dance for Henry Cowell' uses Cowelesque subdivisions of beats in a simple Folk setting while 'Unquiet Night' uses seven bebop chords and seven tempo layers to stake out a mysterious soundscape. The title track is Gann's Ave and Vale to the futurists.10 very different pieces explore 10 very different ideas. Excellent. Sleeve notes. A jewel.

  GARCIA, XAVIER: Radiorama
Code:SIG16001
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A highly coherent radio piece that uses as source material 50 years of French radio archive recordings, here subjected to re-arrangement, layering, the virtual scissors, electronic and concrete music procedures, and the addition of performed Voice (Lucia Recio) and Electric Guitar (Alexandre Mayer). What is especially interesting is Garcia's willingness to use all possible types of musical thinking - all the way to a rock aesthetic, alongside more expected techniques. This is a fresh, focussed, complex, measured, economical and constantly surprising CD.

GARLAND, DAVID: On the Other Side of the Window
Code:ReRe97
Price: £14.30
Quantity in Basket: none
From New York Radio DJ and long time quiet, steady songwriter, these are understated, intelligent pieces on which DG plays a vast array of instruments, building up, in rather Wyattesque fashion rich underpinnings for the voice ( Robert is also a fan, although the songs are completely dissimilar). In addition DG uses many field recordings and on 'I'm Here' even records his singing voice in a busy street, on the phone, riding the subway and in an empty hallway. Guest appearance by Karen Mantler.

  GASUL, FELIU: Punta Turment
Code:NCM6
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
At last a new CD by the great Feliu Gasull, including many more compositions for the trio with Joan Albert Amargos (piano) and Jaume Cortadellas (flute) who made the 'Feliu y Joan Albert' LP and who appeared on the ReR Sampler. There is as well a frighteningly good duo with and by Javier Mas (Arxillaut) and a two guitar piece with Paco de Lucia - plus three recent solo guitar pieces.
