Fast and furious, tightly composed, devilishly complicated pieces performed with hard rock energy and virtuoso precision. Impressive... |

| Xabier Iriondo, Alberto Morelli and Paulo Cantu, with various guests who, in different combinations, cover organs, harmonium, piano, autoharp, acoustic, electric and prepared guitars, trombone, various winds, percussions, exotic string instruments and some processing. The pieces are essentially composed but moderately abstract and very interestingly orchestrated. Unusual. The overall feeling is somewhat cinematic and very transparent, though enigmatic. It's also economical and often surprising. Altogether a substantial record, nicely packaged and at a specially discounted price from ReR. Limited edition of 500. Go on.. |

EASTLEY, MAX: Installation Recordings (1973 - 2008) (dbl CD) Code:PARADIGMDISCS(PD26) Price:
£20.00

| These 2 CDs offer, in 39 tracks, a long-needed overview of the installation work of one of Britain's earliest sound art/ kinetic art pioneers, updating and greatly expanding upon the 1975 LP New and Rediscovered Musical Instruments released on Obscure. These pieces are powered by nature (wind & water) or various motors and were recorded on hills, beaches and in woods and galleries. Shifting from micro-sound to large scale amplification. This is an important body of work. There are also 2 short performance tracks (on one George Lewis is credited with blade of grass). The tracks are musically organised and grouped together in suites. Interesting for historians will be that although the last four decades are covered here, the bulk of these pieces date from the mid-seventies, and are important markers in the history of a nascent form. Beautifully designed, with a 20pp full colour booklet of photo documentation and text by Max. |

EATON, JOHN: First Performances Code:EMFCD056 Price:
£14.69

|
| A collection of microtonal and highly individual pieces featuring the first Syn-ket synthesiser (built in 1964) and including the music from the first public performance with any synthesiser. Songs for RPB features the Syn-ket, two piano insides (the 2nd played by Richard Trythall) and voice; Blind Man's cry is scored for Syn-ket, Moog, voice and tapes; Thoughts on Rilke for voice, two syn-kets and reverb plate. The longest work is the remarkable concert piece for syn-ket and symphony orchestra, and the CD closes with two (in the event unreleased) attempts by Decca to get something commercial out of Eaton and the syn-ket in the form of two pop instrumentals, with added bass and drums. Altogether this is an extraordinary release and unlike anything else I can think of. It's very evolved. Though occasionally annoying (to me, I hasten to qualify: this style of high art singing can get rather wearing) it's still an ear-opening collection, and another window of the fecundity of the 1960s. |

| A lot of quietly interesting music - performed rather than electronically mediated - seems to coming out of Italy these days. Here's another: a quartet with an excellent drummer, basses and winds who play a mixture of composed and partly improvised pieces, often quite tricky time-wise, with skill and enthusiasm. Very small, independent, label. This is more a sketchbook and palette than a fully evolved record, but nevertheless worth taking some time for. Nice package art. |

| Simple, evocative, resonant pieces, slightly Satiesque and C20 minimalist, scored for combinations of lap- and hammer dulcimers, vibraphone, marimba, cello, Chinese gong, singing bowls and other percussion. Originally written for a puppet theatre piece premiered in New York, on a dark topic - which the music reflects obliquely rather than directly, through a sometimes sombre and rather insistent inevitability. No shortage of ideas or subtleties here, as its programme unfolds with a quiet but rich logic. Modest but with depth, and drawing widely on many styles and genres without sacrificing integrity. |

| A documentary film that presents the visionary work and ideas of Iannis Xenakis - structured around musical performances, interviews and testimonies from his collaborators. With performances by Sylvio Gualda, Elisabeth Chojnacka, Benny Sluichin, Frances-Marie Uitti, Lori Freedman, Christophe Roy, and Spiros Sakkas. Xenakis speaks and is seen in rare archival footage of performances of Polytope de Mycenae, La Legénde d?eer and the opera Oresteia. It examines his architecture, including the Philips Pavilion at Expo 58, the convent of La Tourette and his own house in Corsica, and investigates the UPIC - Xenakis? pioneering system which allowed music to be composed by drawing on a computer screen - a culmination of his quest to turn forms realised in space into sound. |

It also includes a long section on the Ottawa Music Company - the 26 piece Rock Composer's Orchestra set up by Chris Cutler and Dave Stewart in 1971. |

Dave Stewart, Mont Campbell and Clive Brooks. For my money one of the most interesting and least acknowledged of the groups of the early '70s, explorers of additive rhythms, complex through-composition and occasional stretches of psychedelic noise. They released three CDs in their lifetime, all still intermittently available, but this collection - all of unreleased recordings complied by the band (mostly from radio broadcasts and well recorded live performances between 1969 and 1972) gives the best impression of the scope and talent of their very substantial enterprise. Released on their own label in a solid digpack with an excellent and informative 20pp booklet, this has some great - and really original - music on it. |

EL-DABH, HALIM: Crossing into the Electric Magnetic Code:WFR003 Price:
£14.69

|
| This is an exceptional collection of pieces by one of the pioneers of electronic and tape music. Halim El-Dabh began experimenting with wire recorders in Egypt even before Schaeffer inaugurated the practice of Musique Concrete in France - one piece here dates from that period ('Wire Recorder Piece', 1944) and is thus of great historical importance. Most of the other works were recorded in 1959 and evidence a remarkable body of work and experimentation. El-Dabh does not sound like his fellow Electronic Music brethren (he was working at The Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Centre) but is more organic, physical and eccentric; more like Sun Ra than Mario Davidovsky. There is much use of objects and some instruments, as well as electronically generated tones and concrete techniques of tape manipulation and electronic processing. And very imaginative use of the human voice. Most of the groundbreaking 'opera' 'Leiyla and the Poet' is included here for the first time on record. Indispensible. |

| 25 Electro-acoustic pieces commissioned around the New Music America festival, from a gallery of North American composers in the field. The constraint was three minutes - to make, as it were, miniatures. The result is a worthwhile and interesting catalogue of techniques, with some pieces that stand out. But it is a sampler, not a 'work'. Comes with a loose leaf 54 page folder and a series of 25 comissioned photographs. |

| An invaluable record of work mostly unheard outside Mexico, in three volumes labelled Origins, 1960-87, Consolidation (1987-06) and Contemporary (1999-07). There is much of great interest in this collection; in fact, most of it is exceptional in one way or another. CD 1, which features many of Mexico's foremost composers exploring a wide variety of techniques, technologies and aesthetics, includes Mario Lavista's highly Plunderphonic 1972 Contrapuno, which lifts chunks of cultural debris (Mahler, Beatles, Buddist chants, , Strauss, Gagaku, pop music, &c.) into varying degrees of distortion and processing, Viols by Manuel Enriquez, a highly evolved and very listenable work for violin and tape and the remarkable Paraiso de los ahogados, from 1960, which employs the most primitive tape techniques with not much more than an overabundance of creativity, to great effect. CD2 includes Roberto Morales' impressive Nahual 2, for Chamula Harp and electronics, which is more wild and performed than carefully orchestrated, the great Papalotl by Javier Alvarez for piano and tape: a tour-de-force, Con jicamo for tape, a highly rhythmic, complex and beautifully judged composition, and Erotica 2, for balloon and violin. CD 3 is mostly more internationalist in style, which means beautifully made, full of detail and subtlety, but rather bland, uniform in sound (I blame the technology, especially the softwares) and with less character, agon, imagination orchutzpah than the earlier pieces (there are exceptions (tk 7, 10?) This is an important collection and a great tribute to Mexican composers. |
