  WHEN: Psychedelic Wunderbaum
Code:trick004
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A radical shift of direction for Lars Pedersen, though done with his exquisite ear, these are electro-songs, sample-techno-pop, restructured psychedelia with a lot of exotica. Hard to say much more about it, for the adventurous and curious. A lot of real playing here to alongside the samples and electroacoustic manipulations..

  WHEN: Whenever
Code:TRICK036CD
Price: £14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
Lars Pedersen with another excellent collection of intriguing pieces made from an interweaving of samples and real playing - taking complex, very musical forms and resembling - no one else I can think of. Mixing a deep instinct for pop form with a contemporary feel for sonic complexity and a great head for structure, this imaginative collection ploughs its own furrow. Largely song based (words by your humble reviewer).

  WHEN: trippy happy
Code:Trick040
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
* late '60s early '70s psychedelic rock, songs, very competently and closely re-originated as only Lars knows how. Specialised taste.

WIESCHE, WOLFGAND IN DER: Music for Films
Code:WIESCHE,WOLFGANDINDER:MusicforFilms
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
More or less electroacoustics, with documentary sounds, linear and precise rather than dense, clean and intriguing. Personal not commercial release.

WILKINSON BROTHERS: People from the Continent
Code:FMC020
Price: £15.57
Quantity in Basket: none
The W Bros are Shintani Kiyoshi (pno, accordion), Funato Hiroshi (Contrabass) and Furutaroh (guitar); the music is co mposed, simple in deceptive way, with a touch of ZNR, a touch of Lars Hollmer, some French Film music, fearless references to the classics, circus music, Nina Rota and a lot of imagination, changing sound and excellent playing. A small gem Japanese import.

WILLIAM BURROUGHS: Break Through The Grey Room [VINYL]
Code:SRV08
Price: £15.00
Quantity in Basket: none
THIS IS A VINYL RELEASE

  WILLIAMS, DAVEY: Antenna Road
Code:transmuseq18
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
This is a record you won't find in your local shop. Davey, pataphysical revue alumnus, one of Fred Frith's invitees on the guitar solos project, quiet master of music and with nothing to prove, delivers a small masterpiece of a record that takes no prisoners but also grinds no axes (except the ones under his fingers). His own sleeve notes sum it up best; these are kernels, fragments, short-form miniatures that because of some strange essential quality fill time and memory. On various instruments (steel body guitars, slide guitar, electric sitar, electric guitar [between one and eleven at a time], acoustic guitar, bass, aluminium strip, electric screwdriver, e-bow - but always pared down, lucid, simple, unassuming) he lines up 30 short and very different pieces that occupy between 35 seconds and 2 minutes 59, but mostly averaging a minute, though it never seems so. And, different as they are, they follow one another and make longer seeming pieces. Some are quite abstract - though always catchy - many are fairly or very loaded with the Blues. A very welcome addition to the library.

WILLIAMS, GARETH & MARY CURRIE: Flaming Tunes
Code:LALR06
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
After leaving This Heat, Gareth went to south India to study kathakali, returning to the UK a couple of years later to attend London University. He also stepped slowly back into music and in 1985 he and Mary Currie released Flaming Tunes - which circulated in hand-coloured cassette boxes, now rare as hen's teeth. A CD reissue has been a very long time coming, but here it is.

WILSON, ANDY: FAUST. Stretch out Time 1970-75 [&
Code:wilsonFaust
Price: £12.93
Quantity in Basket: none
Substantial limited edition paperback, privately published by webmaster of the Faust website, writer and long time scholar of all things Faustian. This book covers all of the Wumme material (making it a good companion to the box set) - as well as Faust IV (recorded at The Manor) - in considerable detail, and in the context of the time - with epiphenomenal forays into music, temporality, the influence of Frank Zappa and other related questions. Many photographs; Indispensable for all fans of Faust or students of the period.

  WILSON, RICK: Suitable Language
Code:TFCD001
Price: £14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
Very interesting record , full of unusual influences and confluences (techno, indian film, percussion orchestra, minimal, electronic, ethnic) with guests Andy Diagram, Tim Hodginson, Ansumann Biswas - and some exquisite singing on one piece by Vivienne Dogan-Corringham. Unusual and with some classic moments.

WILSON, VERANDI, CLIMENT, BARROSO,DJAMBAZOV, BRUMMER: 20 Jahre Inventione VI
Code:EDRZ10016
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A fine collection of electronic pieces from one of the major European electronic music festivals. All these pieces have some special quality that sets them apart from the generic cliché-ridden quality that much electronic music seems these days to exhibit (perhaps because academicism has so much replaced excitement in their production?). These are finely detailed, fully realised explorations of sound. RZ quality control, always reliable.

  WINDO, GARY: Anglo American
Code:Rune189
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
* Includes tracks by Symbiosis and the short-lived MWMW - with Robert Wyatt - and pieces with Dudu Pukwana, Marc Charig, Nick Evans, Harry Miller Louis Moholo.and Roy Babbington and Mongezi Feza. Later tracks are rockier, including a version of Red River Rock (not credited as such) with Hugh Hopper and Laurie Allen. But it's that Brit jazz.style of the '70s and early '80s - for those who like that this is made.

  WINDO, GARY: His Master's Bones
Code:RUNE89
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Featuring- Carla Bley, Brotherhood Of Breath, Mongezi Feza, Steve Hillage, Hugh Hopper, Bill MacCormick, Nick Mason, Steve Swallow, Julie Tippets, Pam Windo and Robert Wyatt. A 'box of dusty and unlabeled tapes' - in fact a collection of missing recordings of his bands and projects made mostly between 1969 and 1978. A worthy tribute to a great player.

WISHART, STEVIE / JIM DENLEY: Tibooburra
Code:SplitRecords8
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Hi Fidelity abstract and concrete sounds. Sparse, narrative deployment of field recordings, disturbances, instruments and processed interference - from bullfrogs to rodeo music - from obvious to mysterious noise. A long hot day. Nicely realised.

  WISHART, STEVIE: Wish
Code:TP027
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
* A collection of nicely judged pieces mainly originating with hurdy-gurdy, violin and some voice, moving easily from highly abstract and extensively processed sound to careful acoustic recording. Guests Julian Knowles, Shane Fahey, Jim Denley and Rik Rue appear on three or four tracks but Stevie seems always to keep her compositional ear on duty.

WISHART, TREVOR & FRIENDS: Beach Singularity, Menagerie
Code:PD03
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Classic recordings by one of the electronic and improvising pioneers. Beach singularity documents an environmental music event, bizarre in itself and rendered stranger by subsequent processing. Menagerie is a collection of excellent tape pieces made to accompany an exhibition of 'assemblages'. Extra to the original LP is Vocalise - a good example of Wishart's highly developed vocal performances. With well made booklet. These are important documents of interesting and in many ways seminal work, missed on it's first appearance. I hope this helps get TW the recognition he so well deserves. Recommended.

  WISHART, TREVOR: Machine
Code:PD25
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Another landmark release from paradigm. Assembled between 1969-1971 this visionary work uses multiple recorded power station, factory and machine sounds (as well as air raids, radio noise, the Apollo landing, a Saturn rocket launch, the sea, body-sounds, exotic musics, a Palestrina mass and voices) to construct a dense, grounded, complex, organic and powerful unfolding of the clash - or infatuation - between humanity and technology as it was manifested in the white heat of technology/nuclear terror/Frankenstein years of the late '60s ands '70s. Aesthetically informed by the dreams of futurism and early modernism, and by the revolutions of electronic and musique concrete, this makes the industrial musics of the mid '70s through the laptop era seem rather one-dimensional. Get there early

  WISHART, TREVOR: Red Bird/Anticredos
Code:OCT001
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Red Bird is a reissue of the classic LP by maverick British electroacoustic and vocal composer Trevor Wishart, unifying concrete scissors and tape technology, computer work, the human voice and environmental sound under a clear emotional and political agenda of content without finger pointing or didacticism. Rare achievement. Anticredos, for 6 amplified voices ('the most versatile instrument we have') is quite extraordinary.

  WISHART, TREVOR: The Vox Cycle
Code:OTP904
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Performed by Electric Phoenix. This is the legendary 6-part cycle centred on the human Voice, raw, radically treated and processed. For vocal quartet, Bass and Tape; the work of 8 years. This covers an enormous amount of ground, and bears the marks of the years of its completion. By Vox 5 there is much radical processing and morphing as the whole ground becomes inherently unstable (this piece also appeared on one of our quarterlies). By Vox 6 we are in rock, dance, chaos territory, a wholly radical opposition to the story so far. And so over the top it's dizzying.

  WISHART. TREVOR: Journey Into Space
Code:PD18
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Composed between 1970 and 72 in one of the UK's earliest electronic music studios, privately pressed as two LP's in 1973. There are acoustic sections, mostly of junk and toys (bike bells, squeeze horns, bottles, metal tubes, combs etc; everyday field recordings, Concrete sounds and a lot of processing (also features current York University students Steve Beresford, Jonty Harrison, Roger Marsh, Dominic Muldowney, Bernard Rands and Jan Steele).

  WISHART. TREVOR: Red Bird/Anticredos
Code:EMFCD022
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Red Bird (a political prisoner's dream) is the 1977 work where 'birds, animals, words and mechanisms' are 'orchestrated and transformed into one another'. A classic introduction to Wishart's trademark morphing procedures, as well as being a powerful and extraordinary creation. And unique in the catalogue of electronic/concrete/electroacoustic works. Anticredos, for six amplified vocalists, was reviewed (see website) when previously released. It is also available separately on Trevor's own imprint. Classic.

  WISHART. TREVOR: Voiceprints
Code:EMFCD029
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Tracks generated around the human voice (though with many other environmental, concrete and processed sounds). Four take political and social shape - cartoons almost - around the voices respectively of Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana; a longer work circles around three icons of the American Dream (King, Armstrong, Presley); Anna's Magic Garden starts from a three year old and takes in scaffolding, pears and parquet; Blue Tulips recounts the unsettling dream of an eighty year old woman. Finally there is the large work Tongues of Fire (see website or old updates for review of this on an earlier release. It is still available separately on Trevor's own imprint).

WOLFF, CHRISTIAN: Early Piano Music, 1951-61 (dbl CD)
Code:mrcd51
Price: £17.63
Quantity in Basket: none
John Tilbury and Christian Wolff , pianos. Eddie Prevost, percussion. Beautifully played. Minimal, spacious, quiet, but you have to like this suspenseful, dry form. An important release for those interested in this period and the Cage, Wolff, Feldman, Brown, Tudor ÎNew York School'. Excellent sleeve notes by Michael Parsons.

WOLFF, CHRISTIAN: I Like to think of Harriet Tubman
Code:MODE69
Price: £14.69

Rare recording of this remarkable composer's pieces for small ensembles. Beautifully done.

  WOLFF, CHRISTIAN: Piano Works 1976-83
Code:MODE43

WONDEURBRASS: Simoneda, Riene des Esclaves. (vinyl)
Code:RRC29
Price: £13.80
Quantity in Basket: none
Four women from Quebec whose approach to playing and composition is at once skilful and personal. Complex, sometimes simple, idiosyncratic and always human; this record marks a gratifyingly successful expressive unification of electronic and acoustic voices which escapes stereotypes or cliche.

WOOD, JAMES: Village Burial With Fire/Spirit
Code:MODE51
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Two excellent percussion pieces for ensembles of existing and invented instruments - exploring microtonality and sustain as well as great ensemble rhythm construction. Unlike nearly all 'classical' percussion works in both aesthetic and resources - falls rather somewhere between Partch, Afro-America, Asian traditional and an imagined complex tribal society in a parallel universe. Highly recommended.

WOODBURY, BRIAN: All White People Look Alike WOODBURY, BRIAN: All White People Look Alike
Code:SomePhil6
Price: £15.28
Quantity in Basket: none
Timely reissue of Woodbury's classic 1987 song rant, previously released in a small scarce vinyl edition. There are song blocks, ranting blocks, interesting arrangement blocks - all adding up to an impressive and quite unique 20 minute wind up. Don't drink coffee before putting this on. Followed by Harrangue - a cycle of 11 songs of varying lengths (0.54 - 3.18) and each following completely different genre rules, until you don't know what sort of a record you're on any more. And funny. When it wants to be.

WOODBURY, BRIAN: And His Popular Music Group
Code:FA013
Price: £13.51
Quantity in Basket: none
Remember songs ? Ochs, Van Dyke Parks, Tom Lehrer, R.Stevie Moore, Steely Dan - intelligent texts that mean something well sung, good tunes, nifty arrangements, surprises, satire, deadly undercurrents. Here's an anomalous contemporary production in the classic mould. Highly recommended.

WOODBURY, BRIAN: Variety WOODBURY, BRIAN: Variety
Code:ReRBW1
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Followers of our Quarterly will recall, about 6 years back, Woodbury's inspired arrangement of 'Shenandoah', which managed to embrace the whole of America history in under 10 minutes. Since then he has been working on completing this collection, his first full ensemble instrumental CD. The interest starts with the ensemble itself, half as expected for Latin, Jazz and Big band arrangements and half traditional American: pedal steel, banjo, accordion and fiddles. One thinks of Van Dyke Parks', and indeed VDP is a fan: '..consummate song writing craft ... indispensible'. This is the work of an arranger and composer still dedicated to the unfashionable pursuit of a kind of extended - mainly instrumental - show music where skill and intelligence and attention to detail matter indiv. An intensely musical record, and a highly unusual one. But then what would you expect from a guy who studied with both Tom Lehrer and Pauline Olivieros?

WOODBURY,. BRIAN: The Brian Woodbury Songbook
Code:SomePhil5
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
For those who like songs, a little eccentric but not too strange, with full arrangements, more in the mainstream of show tradition, except with flashes of brilliance, Brian is one of the few- 'Consummate songwriting and craft, says Van Dyke Parks, 'not since Esquivel and the young Brian Wilson have I heard sound of this romantic design. Indispensable.' A song has to please many masters. These shift from the centre to the edge. Of course I prefer the edge; and you won't come across this CD anywhere else, I'm sure.

WOOF: 7 Inches WOOF: 7 Inches
Code:AdHoc4
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
This CD collects for the first time all four 7" releases on the Woof label - the rare-as-gold-dust EP 'I do, I do, I don't I don't', by Tim Hodgkinson and Bill Gilonis (who went on to found The Work) and the Work's own three track 'I hate America' - plus 3 bonus tracks, one unreleased. 'I do..' is extremely strange, a little as if the Residents had got mixed up with Throbbing Gristle in a Cronenburg movie, only stranger. The Work are fast and furious, meaty and still very impressive This is big stuff. Next up are the ep and single by The Lowest Note on the Organ (Andy Bole and 'Billy Rebel' with, amongst others, 'Sven Halo', Alig, all the members of The Work, Trefor Goronwy, Chris Grey, Ian Hill, Ted Barrow, Veronique Vincent, and Catherine Jauniaux; a veritable who's who for those who follow this Brit strand). Six tracks that combine rather stretched recording techniques with very open form. Instrumentals, and a song or two with... you just have to listen to it. Then there are 4 bonus Bole/Rebel tracks, more obviously tuneful including a 7 minute medley from Ramshackle Pier, perfectly formed. The finale is Bill Gilonis' 'Naiwabi' from the ReR Quarterly. All in a very attractive 6 panel digipack with 12pp booklet of data, photographs and documentation. Nice work.
