Code:BRD018
Price: £22.62

* Simply great. Sun Ra's compositions played by 32 groups - and at frighteningly high standard. Familiar, not jazzworld, contributors include The Residents, Thurston Moore, Elliot Sharp, Eugene Chadbourne/Jimmy Carl Black, Tom Djll, Billy Tiptons, but here is a chance to meet A LOT of great musicians not so familiar. Enormous variety of styles but close to the spririt of the master. Also includes some of Ra's short texts spoken. A tribute worthy of it's cause - proceeds from sales go to the Arkestra. To buy !

Another 19 sound photographs of places, weather, animals, insects, urban and exotic locations. Seventh in this luminous enterprise.

Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Text Soundworks by Cage, Gysin, Ashley, Giorno, Amirkhanian, Coolidge, Gnazzo, Dodge, Anderson, Gallagher and Saroyan made between1962-73. Originally released in 1975, this has become a key release, often cited. Lost are the locked groove recordings that ended each side of the LP (replaced here by a number of repetitions, but hardly the same). With a generous booklet that gives a page to each composer and work, a list of other sources and an overview introduction.

VARIOUS: Big Ears - Fitzgerald's Manifesto
Code:FitzgeraldBigEars
Price: £18.80
Quantity in Basket: none
You want this. Between March 2003 and December 2004 London's Sonic Arts Network ran an extremely eclectic programme for Resonance FM, purportedly adhering to Fitzgerald's Radio manifesto of 1931 (How to make your own radio programme). This CD is compiled from these broadcasts (by Tim Steiner) and includes material from Otomo Yoshihide, Hugh Le Caine, The Mills Brothers, Sol Hoopi, Fluxii Ben Vautier, Philip Corner and Nam Jun Paik, The Chopins (Frederick and Henri - simultaneously), Leon Theremin, The Beau Hunks, Halim el Dahb, Louis and Bebe Baron, a couple of children's choirs (one recorded 1939 in Russia praising uncle Joe), Harry Champion, Glenn Miller and the Rhythm Rats. There are also jingles (means very short snatches of sound), competitions: guess that sound/speaker, cut-ups and a lot else. It's very nicely put together and makes a fascinating listen - as well as containing some useful, historic material. Imaginatively packaged in an EP sleeve with a booklet full of information, relevant and (maybe irrelevant) detail, references and data - enough to keep you entertained for a week, including references to the letter of Fitzgerald's manifesto so you can try to figure the logic, mysterious charts, lists, games, scoring cards. Then there's a poster - of the manifesto itself, with small print annotations and comments, information about the Sonic Arts broadcasts in relation to it, and a list of 'casualties'. I won't explain, you can read it yourself. This is a priceless package and highly recommended. This CD was created by Sonic Arts Network, a national organisation that explores and promotes the art of sound.

VARIOUS: FRANKFURTER AHNUNG ed Ben Watson
Code:SAN2005
Price: £18.21
Quantity in Basket: none
Another Sonic Arts 7" book + CD, released back to 2005, which programmes a highly eclectic selection of pieces ranging from the sublime to the mystifying. The good parts are really good, and I think there are enough of them. Linked by snatches of audio verité, this CD plays like an intriguing radio programme. To skim through the high and lowlights: Marc Guillermont, Ensemble Rosario, Derek Bailey (speaking and playing), Lol Coxhill, Winifred Atwell and The Kenny Process Team all shine; The Prime Time Sublime Community Orchestra and Lendormin convince; Evil Dick has his moments, while Diary, Out to Lunch and Brendon Burton baffle me (to be kind). The print book - a confection of gruesome poetry, talk-down arrogance and rococo wordheaps - will be a matter of taste, but it seems to me that it fails to show the reader any respect. Still, the CD is reason enough to buy this broad collection.

VEES, JACK: The Restaurant Behind the Pier VEES, JACK: The Restaurant Behind the Pier
Code:ReRJV1
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Seven pieces for solo bass. Sounds unappetising? Well. To 'bass', add a lot of pedals and extended techniques, add sound on sound and a mastery of harmonics; to 'solos' add versions of rock classics (Manic Depression - I Want You and As you said) as well as more abstract compositions and electoacoustics. Best known as a Bang on a Can composer, Jack played a lot of rock music in his life. Identity crisis? Postmodern condition? At least he's turning it into art. Not for everyone maybe, but an important work for bass.

  VENI ENSEMBLE, THE: Veni
Code:SF00042131
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
6 pieces by the historic ensemble. Music from the early 60's and from today: composers who use 'forbidden' devices, like melody, transparent diatonic structure, rock riffs mixed in with 'harsh' sounds, noise &c. A good taste of Czech Post/Avantgarde.

  VENI ENSEMBLE: Bratislava
Code:HV0027-2-331
Price: £14.50
Quantity in Basket: none
5 specially commissioned pieces from Christian Wolff, Alison Cameron, Tomá? Boro?, Richard Ayres and Daniel Matej performed by the always excellent Veni Ensemble (here with 2 accordionists, a synthesiser, electric guitar and 2 cellos included in the more familiar instrumentation) under the direction of Daniel Matej (whom old hands will know from his pieces in some of the old quarterlies). Beautifully recorded and played, the music seems to be able to breathe under Veni's care - knowing where it's going, and how to get there (so often not the case in contemporary music recordings). Wolff's piece has that delicate, 60s-modern music feel to it, focussed but floating - not in a panic; Cameron's dreams its way through suspended pitches and passing timbral ephemera arriving at an attenuated luminosity; Boro? employs melodic and timbral, ensemble and solo, materials in a fragmentary, episodic structure of interruptions, contrasts, irrationality and anachronism; a complex and unusual piece; Ayres works with repetition and contrasts, rather simplistically it seems to me - it's the one piece on the CD that seems aesthetically confused and over-formal to me, while Matej manipulates materials taken from Lucy in the Sky and Diamonds are Forever - with clear stylistic input from Louis Andreissen - in a far from obvious way, using two ensembles and (episodically) a kit drummer: a solid, serious piece of work . This is useful window on some interesting contemporary currents. It comes in a digipack with a 20pp booklet of texts by the composers, information about each, and a short bio of Veni.

VERHELST, XAVIER & SEBASTIAN BRADT: M&M Ancient Musics
Code:LPD018
Price: £14.50
Quantity in Basket: none
For the last 40 years the Logos Foundation in Gent has featured, produced and supported a vast programme of experimental music. One of its most distinctive projects is the massive robot orchestra - a huge and growing array of invented instruments - all of them Goldbegeresque physical constructions that produce internally generated acoustic sound, programmed and played through computer driven mechanical processes... Here they have been programmed to play a broad concert of Baroque music, accompanied sometimes by a few humans (recorder, violin, tenor, viola da gamba). Works include pieces by Monteverdi, Dufay, Couperin, Purcell, Handel, Ortiz, Marais, Anon &c. A fascinating and successful CD and a pleasure to listen to, if you like Baroque - whose forms and formalisms suit perfectly these sounds and this kind of formal precision.

VOGT, MICHAEL: Argonautika VOGT, MICHAEL: Argonautika
Code:ReRTUBA2
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
A sound drama for tuba and electronics that constructs its own rich, twilit, rather alien, world. Only the sound of the tuba (sometimes), a few waves and a little thunder sound familiar, everything else is a mysterious presence; the electronics are not at all conventional and though much of the sound is clearly derived somehow from the tuba, it offers no foothold in a familiar place. If landscape were ever an appropriate metaphor for the product of a congeries of sounds, it would be applicable here. Strange, low, melodic lines emerge and submerge; winds from uncharted places bring threat and promise, perfume and debris. A genuinely unusual record that follows its own path all the way off the map. In five episodes, scored variously for single and double tubas, acoustic and electronic tubas, electronics, all manner of processing, and tape.

  VOIGT, JOHN: Outsider Bass
Code:MF0010
Price: £13.51
Quantity in Basket: none
9 excellent pieces comprising solos, duos, quartets, quintets and sextets of string basses, all composed, extemporised, constructed and performed by John Voigt. There are some truly great pieces here which both test the possibilities of the instruments and yet flow, fluid and timeless in to the ear. Moreover this is a limited handmade edition each one thereby personalised by it's author. Limited and probably historic... or should be I think

Taken from two live concerts in Bremen and Hildesheim in 1983, when Michel Berkmans (Bassoon) was in the group. Bremen is a radio recording and both concerts sound excellent. The music is exemplary, a pleasure to listen to and a tribute to one of the best and most imaginative groups born out of the radical ferment of the fringe 1970's. It still sounds contemporary, and the playing is perfect.

VRIL [Bob Drake, Lukas Simonis, Chris Cutler]: Effigies in Cork VRIL [Bob Drake, Lukas Simonis, Chris Cutler]: Effigies in Cork
Code:ReRVRIL1
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Bob Drake proposed this project: to make a CD of Guitar Instrumentals, but now, in the C21- and not to copy the Shadows and Surf bands but to recover the form: tune, arrangement, rhythm, bass, drums, all the essentials: flexibility with focus. Songs pushed them aside in the '60s, and then solos replaced tunes for guitar players. Hendrix remembered, Third Stone from the Sun is a guitar instrumental. We also wanted to return to the old work method, rarer today, where the band sits around with instruments, plays the pieces and works out arrangements together and then records them while they are still fresh. That's what we did, so all the basic tracks were played together, straight to tape. Of course, after recording the pieces we - especially Bob - did a lot more work on them in studio world - but playing and spontaneity remain its underpinning. These pieces cover a lot of ground, fast, and move right along; the sounds continually change and performance is firmly back at the centre of the music. What's not to like?

  VRIL: The Fatal Duckpond
Code:ReRVril2
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Award-winning soundtrack to the film by Horst Gack, (Prix Ultra de Concourse Lumiere, Ulm, 2009: Best Soundtrack). After a break of six years, Chris Cutler, Bob Drake and Lukas Simonis, now with added ingredient Pierre Omer, present the second volume of recordings by the elusive VRIL - a band who revive and update both the great institution of the guitar instrumental and the now sadly neglected practice of collective arrangement, intense rehearsal and live studio performance. Appropriate to the half century that has passed since the birth of the form, these hits dodge about, get bored easily and blend both concentration and complexity with the still indispensable traditional qualities that made the genre great: hummability, crafted sounds, nifty arrangements, ridiculous gimmicks and ensemble playing. 'Neither tribute nor parody, these enigmatic pieces are never more nor less than exactly what they are'.... wrote Lothar Preen in his Melbourne concert review....'but perfectly realised'. With film stills, misleading sleeve-notes and storyboard by the Diogenesian recluse Frank Key.

VRTACEK, CHARLES: Heaven Comes To Town (vinyl)
Code:ReR39
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Side one successfully essays a fascinating project - to invoke a half-distracted internal world moving within, and sometimes responsive to, a half-heard external world. Snatches of melody, echoing a kind of stream-of- consciousness, emerge from and sink into documentary sound which runs parallel with it. Not random but embodying a complex and subtle aesthetic. Side 2 consists of pieces, mostly for piano and guitar, that stretch into silence but wholly absorb. Zen, Satie, Hitchcock... THIS IS A VINYL RELEASE

'Learning' is a collection of quiet, simple and fragile pieces, 'Heaven' is the erstwhile Recommended Records 'RR 39', including the remarkable title track (26 minutes long), which, I think, alone is worth buying the CD for.
