Hungary's wildest. Recorded live at the Knitting Factory and Paradiso. Comes in a substantial book, flat bound, with drawings and texts. Post and Pre punk with musical intelligence, intense expression, screeching, roaring, raw patches and sometimes echoes of Cassiber. Unlike Western groups, Eastern groups still inhabit the semi-colonised fringes of art. This is a good example of a vital eastern life-form.

A collection of electroacoustic children's adventures, with no speaker and not playing down to the tots; it's for children as much as Gulliver's Travels or Don Quixote is. There are plenty of subtle and political ideas here. Organised In sections, often concerned with communication, speech, telephones this is a very unusual attempt to normalise electronics, complexity and simultaneity to the point where it can embody a discourse that need not insist on formal purity or self-reflexion: it's not about the sound - it's about what it's about, and it's aimed, unusually at the young.

Pieces based on a 'procedural score' for composition with environmental sounds. The title track, made in 1967 is a very early environmental composition and is fascinating, as well as being of historical significance. All the other works are later orchestrations evolved out of different readings or electronic analyses of this one recording, three electronic and one for acoustic instruments, all of them mostly drone-centred. For me, the acoustic piece is far and away the best. In fact this 1980 work and the original 1967 recording, are reason enough to buy this CD.

Small edition 'Concert for Electric Guitar and Toy Orchestra, written by Dan Plonsey. Toychestra is a 6 piece goup (all women) who play.... toy instruments. A charming and curious meeting and an opportunity for Fred to play a lot of great, (mostly) tuneful guitar. The problem is that, for their part, the Toychestra's means are very restricted and the use made of them rather predictable and based on repetition. Nice idea with a lot of nice stretches, but a bit plodding and static overall. |

If any band held fast to the values and intensity of vision that marked the most inventive and serious bands of the '70s, it's Univers Zero, who make - and need to make - no concessions to changing fashion; their music is always in its time. Substantial and sometimes dramatic pieces, densely composed, rich with additive rhythms and dark harmony; masterful use of tempi and dynamics. Daniel Denis is one of the great drummers, always intriguing, never demonstrative, with extraordinary drive and precision, and a flawless ear. And these are fine compositions - by Daniel himself, bassoonist Michel Berckmans, bass clarinettist Kurt Bude and Andy Kirk - beautifully played and excellently recorded. Andy Kirk's long piece in particular is perfectly conceived for this band. A fine record.

An expanded line-up with, on some tracks, trumpet, marimba, cello and acoustic guitar. A very clean recording with close attention to sound and atmosphere -with the effect, curiously, of making the whole band sound rather anodyne and surgical. Sampled sounds add to this general lifelessness. I hate to say it, but even where the writing is lively, the rendition is mechanical and the rhythms more numerical than felt. It has its moments, of course, and glimpses of a future clearing (the track Mellotronic, for example) but I miss the playing, the feeling, the power, the intensity of the music of the earlier records. Especially of Daniel himself, one of the most original drummers the last 40 years has produced and who is here very reduced - as are all the players, a result , I suspect, of the recording method and lack of ensemble paying. That's my dissident view. Fans I am sure will beg to differ.

This version a six piece, Drums, Bass, Keyboards Violin, and two wind-players covering Bassoon, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Tenor Saxophone. The recording is excellent, airy, transparent and powerful. The playing exemplary, and Daniel Denis, always one of the most interesting and orchestral of European drummers, is on superlative form. Univers Zero is the only RIO group that has been continually active since the late '70s, and it continues to evolve. For me, this is far and away the best thing they have done in the last 2 decades: it is intensely musical, exact, never excessive; sensitively executed - with great attention to dynamics and timbre - and it resolutely treads its own musical path. This is an exceptional record and is highly Recommended.

It's been a long time since the last. Sombre, minimal, nicely recorded, this is a kind of almost-rock that is insistent but soft, a little distant. Disappearing songs, a fragment of twisted forest. Many fine moments. An acquired taste, but very articulated and finished music. |

Reissue of the fine 1987 release by Swedish trio Ur Kaos, featuring Lach'n Jonsson (who will be well known to old Recommended hands - indeed, included here as a bonus track is one of the pieces he did for the ReR Quarterly many years ago). An inventive, strong - but sombre - collection of instrumental-heavy songs that have internalised Magma, This Heat, Art Bears and other influences, while retaining their own character and mood. Bands used to be like this. Instrumentation is bass, drums, guitar, keyboards and singing. Sensibly divided by a silent track into the original A and B sides so as to retain the listening-programme of the LP, this is a memento of a time when bands had musical personalities, and when instrumental playing was nuanced and expressive. Music with character.

Two classic works from the originator of American tape music and founder of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Centre, which he directed from 1959 to 1983. Mixing electronic and concrete techniques with occasional voices and conventional instruments, these two scores are particularly demonstrative of Ussachevsky's mature musical method. While the first score, for Sartre's 'No Exit' (1961) was used as incidental music (though here we have a coherent suite assembled from the material); the 1967 work, 45 minutes long, for 'Line of Apogee' formed the centre point of the film, which was mostly without dialogue, fast cut, dreamlike and strange. The work indeed is an aural film in itself, and a masterpiece of mixed media and emotive sonic montage. 'Line of Apogee' is a masterpiece.

Europe pioneered Musique Concrete and Electronic Music in radio Studios, while in the USA it was tape music in Universities. The pioneer at Columbia-Princeton (1952) was Ussachevsky. Here at last collected are some of these pieces (earliest 1957 so not the oldest, but the oldest are very clunky), the 1960's electronicised choir piece "Three Scenes from the Creation" and the later "Missa Brevis". The first six tracks are historic and indispensable for any student of the form, as well as being fine pieces.
