  ROVA:ORKESTROVA: Electric Ascension
Code:ALP159CD
Price: £14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
The Rova Saxophone Quartet with guests Fred Frith, Ikue Mori, Chris Brown, Otomo Yoshihide, Nels Cline, Don Robertson (drums), Carla Kihlsteht and Jenny Scheinman (violins) with a well recorded live version of Coltrane's 'Ascension'. An interesting idea, and I bet a great concert. As a record it has great moments, but is sufficiently close to the original to invite comparison and not far enough away from it to break into new territory. A tribute, and nicely done.

ROWE, KEITH , TOSHIMARU NAKAMURA: Weather Sky
Code:erstwhile018
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Icon of early 60's and Icon of late '90's abstract, minimal, radical, theoretical sound performances collaborate on a musical object that is enigmatic, vanishing, insistent, full of threshold sound and controlled dynamics. No toe-tapper.

ROWE, KEITH - GUNTHER MULLER - TAKU SUGIMOTO: The World Turned Upside Down
Code:erstwhile005
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Long, suspended soundscapes where only Taku's sometimes tinkling, sometimes chiming guitar indicates human occupation. Dreamlike in that it doesn't engage with the listener and therefore declines to lead the ear around preferring instead to melt away endlessly - as sound intrinsically does - but leaving no traces in the mind as music typically tries to do. Nice work. And a fine cover by Keith.

ROWE, KEITH / JOHN TILBURY: Duos for Doris
Code:erstwhile030-2
Price: £18.80
Quantity in Basket: none
*  (Dbl CD)

ROWE, KEITH / THOMAS LEHN / MARCUS SCHMICKLER: Run Rabbit
Code:erstwhile027
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
* Active, glitchy, well defined sounds but petty unremitting.

ROWE, KEITH: A Dimension of ..
Code:MR19
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
AMM guitarist and radio player at last with a solo work. Many have been influenced by his techniques (Syd Barratt and Fred Frith to name two) but seldom has he received the attention that is surely his due. But it is the musical conception and the sonic and expressive minutiae of the performance that matter here; in this Keith Rowe is sans pareil.

  ROY, STEPHAN: Kaleidos

  ROY, STEPHANE: Migrations
Code:IMED0373
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Serious, often gripping studio manipulations: First, of collected city sounds - not that you'd ever know it listening to these crisp, strong, flowing strands - though there are occasional snatches of conversation, parade drums and so on. Second, three studies for Pierre Schaeffer and last, a large, dark work for circuses. This is immersion music, the more dissolved you are in it, the better it works. Some fine passages.

  RUINS: 1986-1992
Code:MGC21
Price: £15.00
Quantity in Basket: none
See Vrresto for general coverage of the band. This follows drum demon Yoshida Tatsuya's extraordinary project from the first EP (1986) on through another 19 tracks selected from subsequent releases, passing through 3 bass-players on the way (all hi-power virtuosi) and from 4 track cassette recording (a sound Metallica would pay half a million bucks to get) to multi-track tape. While the essential hell-for-leather, impossible speed-and-complexity menu doesn't change, the sound and mood change interestingly with the bassists (the second, Kimoto Kasuyoshi also plays violin). And the style of the music also evolves interestingly over time from simple complexity to more complex complexity - one might say - and from punk-metallic power and distortion to a cleaner more precise music of parallel but interlocked parts. The tracks with bassist Masuda Ryuichi are especially impressive and substantial. To make no mistake, there's a lot of music here. If you like the other Ruins CDs, this is a gem. Japanese Import.

  RUINS: Pallaschtom
Code:SON09
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
* If you never encountered Ruins, they are a duo: Drums/Vocals and Bass/Vocals, who refer, especially melodically and in their musical material to Magma. Essentially this is unremitting, fast and furious, mostly unison, decidedly virtuosic material. Phenomenal in its way, but an acquired taste.

  RUINS: Tzomvorgha
Code:MGC22
Price: £15.00
Quantity in Basket: none
See Vrresto for general coverage of the band. The pieces here tend to be more evolved and are stylistically much more various, though the main characteristics remain firmly in place. Absolutely remarkable. The two minute Mahavishnu medley at the end says it all. Japanese Import.

  RUINS: Vrresto
Code:MGC14SON-01
Price: £15.00
Quantity in Basket: none
The rhythm section takes over the world. This unique and extraordinary duo rip through 13 very convincing and virtuosic exercises in scalpel-accurate musical assault. Extremely complex, through-composed and full of additive rhythms, unison flurries and staccati - mostly all at terrifying speed - with skid stops, unison accellerandi and decellerandi, abrupt shifts of mood and dynamic - and occasional islands of quasi normality - these pieces manage variety and, with only two voices (mostly instrumentally used), bass, drums and some MIDI controlled extras, sound massive and orchestrated. The influence of Magma and maybe a little This Heat is evident, but not prominent. May need to be taken occasionally or in small doses - in lieu of a caffeine overdose, for instance. Or 500 volts of AC. Made in 1998, with Yoshida Tatsuya and Sasaki Hisashi. Sound is excellent. Japanese Import.

  RUSENBERG, MICHAEL: Essen Momente

  RUSSELL, WILLIAM: Complete Works
Code:MODE34
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
8 unusual and idiosyncratic Percussion pieces by unsung but influential composer and collaborator with Henry Cowell and John Cage, whose first percussion piece was premiered by Slonimsky at the same concert as was Varese's Ionisation. The 1937 piece that finishes the CD is scored for brake drums, pipes, suitcase, tin cans and found objects. American through and through and an important historic compilation. Revised by Russell and newly played by Essential Music.

Super minimal, small sound disturbances and events. Dreamy but not droney, radical but not aggressive. Hard to do well but they do it really well. I like it.

Limited edition
Sorry - weight: outside Europe please add 3 p&p

  SALLE GAVEAU: Alloy
Code:MABO-023
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Scary Japanese quintet that plays close to 'New Tango' (after Piazolla) but also intersects with Rio-esque, jazz inflected and European-Romany musical roots. Accordion, Bass, Electric Guitar, Drums and Violin; it may sound pedestrian, but here it's fast and furious, various, beautifully played, imaginative and full of exquisite musical detail. This is a prodigious piece of work, not groundbreaking but extremely musical. Headphone listening recommended.

SAMKOPF, KJELL - FLORIS VAN MANEN: Music for large Mountain and Vibraphone
Code:SAMKOPFFLORISVANMANEN
Price: £16.45
Quantity in Basket: none
Highly limited edition from Norsk Kulturad of exactly what the label says: field recordings on the mountains - with a lot of weather - of environments with Vibraphone near, far, inaudible - colouring the air. Highly unusual, and very successful.

SAMKOPF, KJELL : Har Du Sunget Den For Grieg?
Code:dBUT010
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Did you sing this for a Grieg? subtitled 'a landscape portrait of the artist 86 years on'. A highly interesting environ/plunder project contrasting minute 'empty' listening (to snow, mountain walks, ancient voices) with simultanious 'tidal' auditions of Grieg's lyric, orchestra, vocal and piano musics. One of a kind.

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA: Japanese Souvenir 10 CD Box
Code:samlaJapBox
Price: £150.00
Quantity in Basket: none
I won't begin to try to describe the dramas involved finally getting a few copies of this. But we have them at last - and they are out of print already, so these are the last available few, for whoever is still looking. Samla Mammas Manna was one of the really great bands of the '70s, were founder members of RIO and remain a glowing example of how intelligence, musicianship, imagination and innovation could be applied infectiously to the best of rock. We have a handful of this limited edition, expensive, beautifully produced boxed collection of all their releases on 8 CDs, all re-mastered, with lots of (mostly live, nicely recorded) bonus tracks. Each album is individually packaged in Japanese mini-album sleeves that immaculately reproduce the original artwork (right down to the infamous "scissors" which, in the old days, prompted the buyer of the double album to snip it in two); each mini-sleeve is individually wrapped in re-sealable cellophane and each disc slips into the mini-sleeve in protective gauze. This is great music in luminous packaging and, for those who care, highly collectible. Contents: Samla Mammas Manna, Maltid, Klossaknapitatet, For Aldre Nybegynnare - Schlagerns Mystik, Familiesprickor, Snorungarnas Symphonie (for some Bildcirkus which is someone else entirely).

  SANGSTER, JOHN: Marinetti
Code:SIR01CD
Price: £14.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Soundtrack to Albie Thoms' 1969 full length experimental movie (about a 1/3 of the audience left during the premiere) that in some ways was a distillation of a year or two of down-underground happenings and multi-media shows. This is the late '60s in a precious phial. Hard to imagine any other way in which such a sound document might have been preserved. But here it is in all its late sixties chaos, featuring a select gang of performers from Australian psychedelic and experimental bands, plus a great deal of captured sound, plunderphonia and unidentifiable racket. In three parts, it starts modestly with conversation (about Marinetti and the Futurists) half drowned out by playing and noise and snatches of... stuff ... layered over the top. Part 2 drops the Marinetti while still retaining a cacophony of speech fragments and a lot more noise, debris and improvisation. This is pretty great, but then comes part three, which is just a piled-up din of talking, pop snatches, animals, instruments and the kitchen sink. Beautifully mixed and full of rich swirling detail. You could listen to this a lot of times.

  SARY,LASZLO: Locomotive Symphony
Code:BMCCD010
Price: £15.86

Entire piece built from location train recordings. Atmospheric and substantial. Plus all the raw recordings to follow. Very nicely presented. Hungarian label.

SATIE, ERIK : Musique de Rose-Croix, Pages Mystiques, USPUD (double CD)
Code:LTMCD2469
Price: £16.16
Quantity in Basket: none
Early enigmatic pieces by the master comprising the works written for the Rosicrucian order during Satie's stint as their composer and chapel master, plus various pieces of floating incidental music for mystical dramas and the ballet USPUD. Breathtakingly prescient and daring. A welcome release, and a joy to listen to. Beautiful packaging and useful notes.

SATIE, ERIK: Avant-Derniers Pensees. Vol 1
Code:LTMCD2501
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Another excellent collection of Piano pieces, continuing in the LTM Satie series that includes many of the better known works - the Gymnopedies, Gnossiennes, Sports et Divertissements - as well as lesser known but equally exquisite short, mostly melodic, enigmatic pieces that are a pleasure to listen to. Fine playing. Useful notes. To be taken in small doses for best appreciation.
