  PUSH PULL: PushPull
Code:SONG1001
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Eccentrically played and interrupted blues-rock-jazz- sort-of-thing, gone terribly wrong, but in a unique and fascinating way. Well played, funny, imaginative and one-of-a-kind vignettes. Interesting.

  PYLE, PIP: Bash
Code:Rune193
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Glad to take an opportunity to praise Pip. This is his second solo album, this time live - with a quartet (Keyboards, Guitar, Bass), highlighting that strength good musicians have, which recording can often obscure: immediate response and an interactive instrumental fluency that comes from a mixture of technique and unfeignable sensitivity. Excellent sound, exemplary playing all round and careful mixing make this a very listenable and enjoyable CD. In Hatfield era mode, though with Pip's own accent and a nod to what came after, all done with a light, smart, touch that comes naturally to those who invented this genre - setting it apart from much of what now passes as 'prog', which just tries too hard. This isn't experimental or complex, in fact it's quite bland, but it does what it does well and easily, like the jazz of the fifties and early sixties (that's meant as praise) - and Pip plays brilliantly, and only when he needs to. Chapeau.

  RADAR FAVOURITES: Radar Favourites
Code:RR017
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
This legendary band - with Gerry Fitzgerald, Jack Monck, Cathy Williams and Charles Hayward - was put together by Geoff Leigh just after he left Henry Cow in 1973. Geoff and Gerry had been in Mouseproof together (and Gerry next surfaced on the second volume of Frith's Guitar Solos); Jack Monck, then best known from his time in Delivery with Lol Coxhill & Carol Grimes, was also an old Cambridge friend of Henry Cow's [he, Fred and Chris were briefly in a band called Sparks together]; Cathy and Geoff went on to form Red Balune. So, this captures a mightily interesting socio-musical moment. The recordings here are of the first edition of the band, since everything else seems to have been lost - including the famous Virgin demo, which I remember we all loved but Virgin passed on. But, here are two great, mostly instrumental, compositions, strong, filmic and with their own unique musical identity, and a handful of rare live recordings, the last of which is an improvisation, to my ears, quite spookily Cowish. This is a recording very much of its time, eloquent of a musical climate and style that has long vanished, almost without trace. If you were there or are interested in the critical byways of the period, this is pretty essential. Carefully re-mastered from original reel-to-reel tapes, with the originally projected cover by Barney Bubbles.

RADULESCU, HORATIU : String quartet no.4 opus 33
Code:EDRZ4002
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Performed by the Arditti Quartet and eight virtual quartets - or 'a virtual 128 string viola da gamba' - tuned to '128 unique pitches corresponding to components of a C spectrum, between the 36th and 641st harmonic'. The effect is a complex, pulsating, nebulous impression of gravity in operation, of clouds and particles drifting and agglomerating in an uncertain space - if you accept such metaphors - otherwise it's a suspension of apparently chaotic sounds. Would work best either as background sound or sound to be surrounded by.

RATSIMANDRESY, NADIA and MATTEO RAMON AREVALOS: Messiaen et autour de Messiaen for ondes Martenot an
Code:ReROM1
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
A signature collection of exquisite works for onde Martenot and piano by Olivier Messiaen, N'Guyen Thien Dao, Jacques Charpentier and Tristan Murail, exploring the many voices of this extraordinary instrument. The onde (or ondes musicales or le Martenot) was first demonstrated at the Paris Conservatoire in 1928 and immediately attracted the attention of Varese, Milhaud, Koechlin, Jolivet, Honegger and Messiaen, who all wrote for it - cumulatively ensuring its survival. Seven years younger than the theremin, the onde is a far more sophisticated, complex and versatile instrument, not least because of the combination it offers of pitched and glissando tones, and the wide range of filters and different resonating media through which it can sound: loudspeakers, gongs, sympathetic resonating strings and reverberant enclosures. The compositions here exploit every unearthly aspect of the instrument and are beautifully performed: a remarkable and exquisite collection.

  RATTE, MICHAEL: Passages et Derives
Code:AMIM941
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
This is improvised music on the rare pattern of the late '60's- clean, confident, decentred, dry, 'composed', intentional, like independent worlds that make a kind of hyper-sense. Beautifully made and very open listening. main instruments are percussion and prepared percussion, electronics and some direct electroacoustic manipulations. Strong on concept and economic in realisation. Refreshing.

  REBELO, NUNO: Azul Esmerelda
Code:LLL011
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Second CD from this unusual guitarist and composer. Comparisons are invidious but Nuno works in a territory similar in some ways to Fred Frith's soundtrack work. And this CD is in fact music made for dance, often impressionistic and abstract, but always clearly focused.

REBELO, NUNO: Sabado 2. Minimal Show
Code:GGG001
Price: £14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
Very very good collection of pieces written for theatre by ex avant-garde groupist, now art-purpose composer (a kind of Portugese Fred Frith would be very fair). Excellent - for all kinds of Guitars, Percussion, Keyboards, Horns, Samples. 26 pieces...Sound explorations, Close Compositions, Open pieces, Strongly rhythmical pieces, Pure Eccentricities; always to the point. I'd buy it.

  REDOLFI, MICHEL: Nausicca
Code:AUD6004
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Founder of GMEM electronic studio and early computer music, composer Redolfi became famous for his underwater recordings and concerts, where sound is broadcast through water instead of air and listeners float. This excellent CD is a collection of 3 works made between 1991-2004 for a 60-channel installation at the Nausicca Sea Centre, using underwater and forest soundscapes mixed with crystal and conventional instruments - all very much transformed and electronically reshaped. Rich and engulfing and profoundly sonorous, these pieces achieve an extraordinary rapport between organic and acoustic complexity, and electronic depth. Highly recommended.
