Historic recording from the 1969 Music Now concert of (effectively) an expanded AMM (expanded vastly – 40+ listed, many later to be involved in the Scratch Orchestra). It captures eloquently the excitement of discovering a new – undirected - way to work with sound that has now become familiar but was then a revelation. The difference is everything- discovery excites, repetition bores; this pins the discovery.

Another fine piece of work from percussionist HP who works with a MIDI keyboard and algorithms that produce piano parts which are both structured and unpredictable, which he then accompanies - like a hand in a glove. The confusion between mechanical productivity and human expressivity is both fascinating and eloquent. And it's good to listen too (not all at once I recommend).

Insufficient sleeve notes are provided to this very interesting record for drums and computer based on bio-mathematical alogrithms. On the "Biological" tracks the computer plays piano and the effect is mysterious and very engaging - sets of rhythms and counter rhythms sounding like conventional kit and piano played in real time but indefinably unjazzy - un-anything - while remaining exiting and highly musical. The 2 "Chaotic" pieces have the computer also playing flute-sounds and a greater complexity of structure and simultaneous lines. All manner of musics emerge and submerge as it unfolds in its protean shape-shifting course. I think this is an important and exemplary record. Maximum stars.

Ahead of the game, here Provini presents, in 5.1 surround sound, a music, mostly percussive, derived from a customised programme that brings composition, improvisation and real time processing together through algorithms that calculate, modify and position sounds in space. Provini, an excellent percussionist builds this net of sound around himself and his performances (these pieces are, interestingly, made without overdubbing) in a wholly musical and performative (though 'impossible') way. The DVD will play in stereo if you don't have 5.1 or home cinema, and is still fascinating.

PYLE, PIP: Bash Code:Rune193 Price:

|
Glad to take an opportunity to praise Pip. This is his second solo album, this time live - with a quartet (Keyboards, Guitar, Bass), highlighting that strength good musicians have, which recording can often obscure: immediate response and an interactive instrumental fluency that comes from a mixture of technique and unfeignable sensitivity. Excellent sound, exemplary playing all round and careful mixing make this a very listenable and enjoyable CD. In Hatfield era mode, though with Pip's own accent and a nod to what came after, all done with a light, smart, touch that comes naturally to those who invented this genre - setting it apart from much of what now passes as 'prog', which just tries too hard. This isn't experimental or complex, in fact it's quite bland, but it does what it does well and easily, like the jazz of the fifties and early sixties (that's meant as praise) - and Pip plays brilliantly, and only when he needs to. Chapeau.

This legendary band - with Gerry Fitzgerald, Jack Monck, Cathy Williams and Charles Hayward - was put together by Geoff Leigh just after he left Henry Cow in 1973. Geoff and Gerry had been in Mouseproof together (and Gerry next surfaced on the second volume of Frith's Guitar Solos); Jack Monck, then best known from his time in Delivery with Lol Coxhill & Carol Grimes, was also an old Cambridge friend of Henry Cow's [he, Fred and Chris were briefly in a band called Sparks together]; Cathy and Geoff went on to form Red Balune. So, this captures a mightily interesting socio-musical moment. The recordings here are of the first edition of the band, since everything else seems to have been lost - including the famous Virgin demo, which I remember we all loved but Virgin passed on. But, here are two great, mostly instrumental, compositions, strong, filmic and with their own unique musical identity, and a handful of rare live recordings, the last of which is an improvisation, to my ears, quite spookily Cowish. This is a recording very much of its time, eloquent of a musical climate and style that has long vanished, almost without trace. If you were there or are interested in the critical byways of the period, this is pretty essential. Carefully re-mastered from original reel-to-reel tapes, with the originally projected cover by Barney Bubbles.
