NOT NECESSARILY ENGLISH MUSIC: A collection of Experimental Music from Great Britain, 1960 -1977 (db
Code:EMFCD036
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Compiled by David Toop for the Leonardo Music Journal, this is an invaluable window on a good part of the fringe music that enlivened the UK music community 30 years ago - and comprises archive recordings of documentary importance and variable quality, including performances by AMM, Max Eastley, Intermodulations, Frank Perry, Daphne Oram, Bob Cobbing, Hugh Davies, Lolk Coxhill, John Stevens, Parker/Lytton, Steve Beresford, Cornelius Cardew, Ron Geesin, Gentle Fire, Derek Bailey, Toop/Burwell, Campiello Band, Mike Cooper... of course there are many omissions, and as Toop says, space is limited (although two people have two tracks each, so there's space for a couple more at least); however - and I hope this does not seem arrogant - it does strike me as strange how thoroughly Henry Cow and its members have been airbrushed out of this particular history. This was our period, much of what we did was as experimental as anything else going on at the time - and indeed we organised concerts - and performed with - half the people on this compilation (HC was also part of the LMC, Fred Frith's 'Guitar Solos' was released in 1973 - and two of the people on this set even auditioned to join the group). Look in almost any history however and - nothing. It's strange. That aside, this is still an important, if partial temporal document.

  NUCLEUS: Live in Berlin (dbl)
Code:RUNE173
Price: £19.39
Quantity in Basket: none
* In its way a classic of what jazz-side British jazz rock was about. A bunch of technically facile players wind around grooves with enough imagination to evade tedium. If you like this annexe of British Ō60Õs jazz-rock, you will probably like this; itÕs well done.

Code:NUNOREBELO:OntheEdge
Price: £14.04
Quantity in Basket: none
Assembled from various improvisations in France, featuring Nuno (E.Guitar), Marco Franco (drums) and occasional extras. Often compared with Fred Frith, Rebelo uses a wide variety of sounds and techniques, as does the excellent Marco Franco; an impressive duo. The first half especially is a model of intelligence, musicality and imagination in improvisation. Good sound, and some classic passages.

O'MEARA, CHARLES: By Chance (CDR and artwork)
Code:omearaChance
Price: £10.58
Quantity in Basket: none
A very fine CD by the artist formerly known as Charles Vrtacek, here playing a wide variety of instruments, treated and untreated, somewhat after the manner of Biota. A sustained, evolving, unfolding of sounds both synchronous and asynchronous, but always in focus and to the point. Excellent. This is small, limited edition pressing expressly made for ReR.

ONJO: Live Vol. 1 series circuit
Code:dmf115/116
Price: £18.51
Quantity in Basket: none
Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra Live in Berlin Tokyo and Nagara. These concerts feature expanded, and very expanded (30+musicians) versions of the project and cover a great deal of musical ground. Vol.1 features the slower, more atmospheric, textural and more obviously jazz-aligned sides of the group, although there is plenty of intensity from an ensemble filled with great performers and operating under a highly sensitive and imaginative director. Strings and voices are used to fine effect and genres are constantly subtly shifting. Excellent sleeve-notes by Otomo.

ONJO: Live Vol. 2 parallel circuit (dbl)
Code:dmf117/118
Price: £18.51
Quantity in Basket: none
Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra in Berlin Tokyo and Nagara. These concerts feature expanded, and very expanded (30+ musicians) versions of the project and cover a great deal of musical ground. This second volume features the broader, wilder, louder, more Ground Zeroish side of the group, as well as exploring more open, contemporary structures. The pieces all start from compositions by Eric Dolphy, Charlie Hayden, Yamashita Takeo and Otomo himself, but they travel a great distance from there. Ideas, timbres and very intense performances are the sinews that articulate this impressive musical beast. With humane, thoughtful and intelligent sleeve-notes by Otomo. Nicely packed.

  OPTICAL 8: Bug
Code:DSA54048
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Screaming. The legendary Hoppy Kamiyama and band rip up heavy strips of solid power and rodeo with them. The energy you find only in Japan, coupled with an eclectic and surefooted technique.

  ORAM, DAPHNE: Oramics (double CD)
Code:PD21
Price: £20.86
Quantity in Basket: none
At last a record - the first - to celebrate the work of the elusive Daphne Oram; moving force behind the establishment of the BBC's radiophonic workshop, author of the first electronic soundtrack for British Television, and inventor of the 'Oramic' system of electronic sound control through drawing. She soon left the BBC, working over the next decades on concert presentations, film, ballet and theatre music, as well (like Raymond Scott) on TV commercials to pay the bills. All are collected here, with excellent booklet notes and archive photographs. The collection covers the years 1959 -1977. You can hear, especially in the early works, the physical processes involved in the discovery of new sonic forms. It is heartening to see these important but forgotten works collected and made accessible, filling a small but vital gap in the record. Perhaps Delia Derbyshire will be next? Congratulations to Clive Graham and Paradigm Discs for ignoring fashion and miniscule sales and helping to recover an occluded part of British musical history.

  ORNSTEIN, LEO: Piano Music
Code:8.559104
Price: £8.81
Quantity in Basket: none
One of the great, and generally overlooked American modernist (and then individualist) composers (famously: Suicide in an Airplane, 1913) with a collection of pieces, all very different, and all very listenable, written between 1913 and 1988. Very few records exist of his, and this is not only good, but thanks to Naxos' interesting business plan, cheap.

7-inch EP in a series of new experimental Czech groups. Interesting. Incredibly rare now. Order By Name

OSSATURA with TIM HODGKINSON: Dentro OSSATURA with TIM HODGKINSON: Dentro
Code:ReRO1
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Somewhere between Musique Concrete and a kind of abstract improvisational work, using extended techniques and electrification that disconnects sound from any recognisable source. A fascinating first record that sits between studio improvisation and extensive post production processing composition.

OSSATURA: Verso OSSATURA: Verso
Code:ReRO2
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
The second release from this abstract trio who mingle hard electronics with acoustic and processed percussion. A more focused, subtle aesthetic here, I think, than on their last also excellent - CD. These are finely tuned and seamlessly integrated sounds that have been crafted and, importantly, performed; this is essentially played music that had been painstakingly reworked, and bears still the deep qualities of interactivity and immediacy that created it.

  OSSO EXOTICO: 1st CD
Code:OEV1
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
For specialists. A curiosity from Portugal. 9 pieces pursuing unusual sound and odd structural arrangement. Half minimal, half beyond it. Unusual packaging. Very Limited.

  OSSO EXOTICO: 2nd CD
Code:ANANANA11001
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Another indescribable piece of work- formal but often beautifully paced...abstract, minimal - maybe sometimes a little too extended.

OSTERTAG, BOB/OTOMO YOSHIHIDE, JUSTIN BOND: Pantychrist
Code:Seeland510
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Sampler and turntable band/force of nature underpin spoken, howled, sneered, pure sound, stand-up and sometimes almost sung monologues by JB. Theatre, noise and club tempi, with Rolls Royce action from Bob and Otomo. Some will find the texts entertaining, others may find themselves nonplussed (I count myself mainly in the latter category) but they mostly fit right in. There are spooky and funny moments. And a great overture.

  OSTERTAG, BOB/OTOMO YOSHIHIDE: Twins
Code:CMDD0-00030
Price: £15.28
Quantity in Basket: none
Concept- 3 invitees prepare 3 original pieces of about 4 minutes. Bob and Otomo generate pieces from deconstructing, sampling, reconstructing, and sometimes supplementing them; each 'parent' thus leading to a set of 'twins'. The original pieces - by Chris Cutler, Yagi Michiyo and Herb Robertson - appear too, so here's a window on samplers, musical thinking and plunderphonia - as well as a very listenable CD. Japanese Pressing

  OSTERTAG, BOB: Creative Life
Code:ostertagCreative
Price: £15.00
Quantity in Basket: none
A well written, thoughtful apologia sua vita by composer, performer, experimentalist, instrument builder, activist, journalist, professor of techno-cultural studies and essentially decent human being, Bob Ostertag, which connects his approach to composition and performance with his life as someone who gives a damn. It's an examined life that moves between hands-on political engagement - with the guerrilla struggles in Nicaragua and El Salvador, with various movements of internal dissent in the USA and with political journalism - and musical experimentation, modalities of performance and meditations on the nature and implications of new technologies for the relations between people, and between people and things. This last bears directly on Ostertag's musical work, since virtually all his instruments - from sets of modified tape recorders and cassette players, through early synthesisers, samplers and finally computers - are used in such a way as to confront head on their nature as essentially dead delivery systems. Bob devises strategies and applications to control - and humanise - their output, and the larger part of this book describes and explains the very different musical projects Ostertag has undertaken to date - touring with Anthony Braxton; quickly becoming embroiled in the then nascent 'New York Scene' and working with John Zorn, Fred Frith and others (he has been a regular participant in ensembles with Fred ever since); hard travelling attempting to perform his Jugusloavia Suite in Serbia in the immediate aftermath of the NATO bombings; tours with Pierre Hebert, garbage and live animation; orchestrating an AIDS demonstration for string quartet; designing a (now forever lost) glass ensemble for Spiral; launching Pantychrist,) a trio with Otomo Yoshihide and drag extremist Justin Bond on an unprepared world, and a succession of collaborations with writers, poets, sculptors and painters (the chapter on Jim Magee and Annabel Livermore is extraordinary, and all too human). In the final chapters, Bob has pertinent things to say about the effects on culture of mechanised rhythms, quantisation, academic snobbery, copyrights, skill and the traps, inimical to the human spirit, set by electronic instruments today.
