Taken from a permanent 14-channel sound and light installation occupying the giant Oberhausen Gasometer, this stereo remix makes excellent listening on its own. Especially in darkness. The sonic materials employed include the now rarely heard Trautonium, glass harmonica, Tibetan metal bowls, double bass, field recordings, synthesiser, voice, tuning forks, glass gong and a glass cornet. Each sound speaks for itself and has a life of its own. This is a special form that requires special listening, or perhaps not listening but allowing the environment around you to be transfigured by sound.

Originally released on vinyl in 1987in Milan, this CD is a welcome record of Christina's earlier work (1983-6) and of her grounding in composition and formal music. Two are electroacaoustic, combining pure electronics with musique concrete techniques and exotic instruments (seashell trumpet, eagle bone and crystal glass bowls) alongside field recordings and an early drum synthesiser. Careful and with a fine sense of sonorities, these are airy, open pieces.

Elaborately packaged with an almost transparent CD (not sure how they achieved that) containing 7 audio tracks, one interactive track (Mac & PC) and an MPG movie. Christina Kubisch is one of the names that always comes up when SoundArt is the topic of conversation. - so these CDs don't contain 'music', that is to say, melodic, rhythmic or linear structure (though I would say they are a lot more musical than much of today's sonic release menu) so much as invoking atmospheres formed of te complex overlappings and interweavings of tones. The movie is especially welcome since it explains what these sounds are for, how they are encountered in the installation for which they were made, and how they relate to the landscape in which they were intended to be heard. Altogether useful document in particular because it restores some sense of place to work that is always site specific but usually presented in recordings devoid of the context that gives them power.

Exquisitely recorded on-site at an installation in the Matthauskirche, Berlin that used a set of bells found at the disused St. Inglebert mine and using as structuring material the signal codes that informed miners about the status of the mineshaft elevators. Structured bell tones and silences. At one point the church bells sound faintly outside at the same time. Strangely compelling. Complex tones. Nicely documented with colour photographs.

From an installation at Museum of Contemporary Art in Boston, this piece is a slow mediation of bells (recorded from the long silent Mass MoCA clocktower) that have been pitch shifted and reshaped electronically and respond to information about the intensity and position of the sun in real time. Strangely satisfying and minimal. But bells are like people and their voices do seem to have a biological effect on us, Excellent full documentation, notes and photographs.

The incomparable Sergey, recorded in London, hauls his piano through thickets of sound with deceptive ease. Protean, hopping from one genre to another, scarily free of gloss and bluster, this is direct, sometimes irresponsible music that plays endlessly with form. A long cat and mouse performance with Brubeck's 'Blue Rondo a la Turque' forms the centrepiece; as cavalier with time as the early Dollar Brand.

Thoroughly composed 'electronic cantata' that juxtaposes 2 cryptic sources: short-wave radio spy number transmissions and the utterances of the oracle at Delphi. For Piano, 2 voices and electronics - fascinating work. Also includes hYDAtorison (for loudspeakers with sliding tones mounted inside piano, exiting varying pitches with feldmanesque playing alongside) and tetTIX for drum machines and heavy processing: unnatural sounds of nature as the machines call to one another in an'electronic Eden'. Altogether an impressive body of work.

Large sounding, inventive trio: Drums percussion, various wind instruments and banjo, and samples - excellent players all and inventive. Mostly rhythmic (slightly toward jazz rock) or quasi rhythmic, with the sampler used in very musical and intelligent way - as a member of the playing group, neither hip hop nor abstract carpets, adding virtually to the band (inter alia) Heiner Goebbels, Arvo Part, Derek Bailey, Brian Eno, Gyorgy Ligeti... Altogether this is an interesting and impressive set of pieces, the more so for being live.

|
I could never make that music again [£12.50] SR2497 pieces by Jean-Yves Leloup - three of them with Jean-Philippe Renoult and four with Erik Pajot - which are built around interviews made and found with electronic music composers, musicians and DJs, talking variously about their own work and matters technical, aesthetic or commercial. Each is a self contained work following a single idea which, though constructed around text, is largely composed of sounds captured from cities, open spaces, exotic locations, machines or media - all both raw and cooked. More like very stretched radio pieces than pure music works. Interviewees include Derrick May, Autechre, DJ Shadow, The Residents, Ryoji Ikeda, Simon Begg, Steve Reich, Richard James, Coldcut, Squarepusher, Davoid Toop, Thomas Brinkmann and Mixmaster Morris. |

Reissue of the genuinely strange and idiosyncratic masterpiece reclusive and light-sensitive LV. In the guise of VERY OPEN and stretched pop songs, experiments stream out at A LOT per minute. A melange of snappy tunes, highly unobvious arrangements, left handed humour, sound research, super radical mixing and one off words and singing style. With extra material including the legendary and wholly perfect Beauty Spreads 7-inch. In my view, this is a benchmark best of the late 70's Magnum Opus.

A further chapter in the series that explores ubiquitous and ignored aspects of the (mostly public) architectural soundscape; this time it's ventilation units in France. Eric has recorded some 30 different units, in hospitals, at Radio France, the Pasteur Institute, the Centre Pompidou, in a library, a restaurant, an apartment and at the Cite de la Musique. These sites span 50 years of construction and very different acoustics. Each extract is two minutes long and runs directly into the next (though they are separately track-marked). At the beginning and end, calibration tracks collapse all 30 recordings into one minute. Eric has consciously sequenced the 30 recordings with aesthetic intent, but he also says that 'this CD is intended to be an object without distinctive function'. It is certainly a recording that fulfils many different functions, documentary, architectural and aesthetic. It also changes radically according to what level it is played at, and what aural - or philosophical - work it is asked to do.

From the festival of microtonal music. La Plante is an instrument builder, and all these pieces work around the unique properties customised invented instruments: cloud chamber bowls, glass rods, fire alarm bells, bent stainless steel, jars, soda straws, yoghurt containers, cinder blocks, hoses, pieces of wood, conduit pipe, and so on. The opening track deliberately references Partch and is excellent. Subsequent pieces explore different ideas, and different sets of instruments; always eccentric, often effective.

Originally released in 1987, this is a wide ranging record - additive rhythms, interesting, broad instrumentation (all manner of keyboards, bass, guitar, violins, xylophone, brass, reeds, recorder, synthesizer and a few exotics - variously distributed) all set in a well-composed, very loosely rock based context - with some tape manipulation, studio experimentation and open form passages; a summary of the state of the art. Assembled over time in Lars' own studio, this marks well a craft aesthetic that has all but disappeared now. His track from the Recommended Quarterly 0203 is included as an extra track.

11 pieces beautifully played by flamenco guitarist Alfredo Lagos, and then put through an electro acoustic obstacle course by Venosta and Mariani. The raw guitar is reversed, inverted, cut up, re-played, propelled by processed handclaps and swathed in delayed vocals. The large-scale hypnotic structures contrast strangely with the pristine simplicity of the original guitar pieces, and the album works as a profound meditation on culture, technology, art and authorship. Unusual, genre-bending and enjoyable.
