IVES, CHARLES - HENRY BRANT: A Concord Symphony (The Henry Brant collection Vol.7)
Code:Innova414
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
What it says on the label. Brant (b.1913 and still kicking) whose unique poly-phonic, poly-metric, poly-stylistic and radically spatialised approach to composition was inspired by Ives decided in the late '50s to orchestrate Ives' luminous Concord Sonata (for piano). It took 36 years to complete and this is the result: an American Symphony on the grand scale - and impossible to relate to 1911 - when the Concord was commenced - although Brant has not updated anything, remaining true to Ives' score. A fascinating project. And interesting to compare with the piano version.

  IVES, CHARLES: Universe Symphony
Code:SS007
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
This realisation of Ives' unfinished, stunningly original, and prescient score was assembled and conducted by Johnny Reinhard (composer, performer, academic and founder of the Festival of Microtonal Music). It is a nothing less than a revelation. Beautifully recorded, this is a massive, timeless work that seems to hang free in musical space, slowly existing, like a ghostly nebula. Unprecedented both in its use of multiple tempi and epic dynamically-static structure, this is a work you really have to hear. Just the first 19 minutes of enormous, inevitable, impenetrable percussion, embodying an extremely slow, felt rather than heard, pulse with instruments moving in their own orbits, seemingly at their own, mysteriously changing tempi, is a step into another world and into another way of listening.

  JABLKON & SVECENY: Mumlava
Code:SUB0003-2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A light, sure touch. featuring variously, acoustic guitars, violin, viola, bass, oboe, bassoon, percussion and keyboards, where every detail is important and which features an effective and unusual use of low-mixed voices to add instrumental colour. Highly articulated and imaginative music, exquisitely realised.

  JABLKON: Baba Aga
Code:B+N9202
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
New CD from the eccentric acousticians. Not easy to clasify. Whoever heard the last will know what to expect. Newcomers I'd still advise to listen to JABLKON and SVECENY first. Two new releases.

  JABLKON: Devata Vlna
Code:SU5365-2311
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Finally reissued on CD, this was one of the signature Czech bands, unplaceable really. Not electric, but tough - though highly eccentric. A bit of acoustic early Etron Fou, but stranger... Involved, twisty compositions for guitars, tuned percussion and junk. Reissued here with 6 extra titles. Welcome back.

  JABLKON: Machalaj
Code:BABAN9504
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
More as known.

  JABLKON: Symphonic
Code:F10003-2031
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
As the title implies, Jablkon had the Czech Symphony Orchestra to play with - and violin maestro Jaroslav Sveceny. 11 pieces. A curiosity with some fine parts. Someone did a monstrous amount of work for this. A document

  JACOBS, HENRY: Radio Programme No.1
Code:jacobsRadioProgramme1
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Originally released in 1955 on Folkways, this is an extraordinary collection of audio experiments, cut-ups, loops, Indian music, and spoof interviews (genuinely funny) based on Jacobsā visionary radio programme ĪMusic and Folkloreā in the early '50ās. A very welcome reissue.

  JAPANESE INDEPENDENT MUSIC: Title (book)
Code:JIMBook
Price: £26.00
Quantity in Basket: none
An encyclopaedia, with a short historical overview, several more specialised articles, A-Z entries on groups and artists with full discographies, label contacts, publications, venues and website indexe and a couple of maps. 360 pages and pretty comprehensive (of course one can think of missing entries - mainly earlier groups whose vinyl records have not been reissued on CD) but that's nitpicking; essentially, this is the only resource of it's kind and invaluable. Congratulations to Frank Stoffer and his team of 20. Comes with a CD of 18 previously unreleased tracks (inc. Haino Keiji, Acid Mothers Temple, KK Null, Hoppy Kamiyama, Haco, Ex Girl, Ruins, Harpy &c.).

JAUNIAUX, CATHERINE: Fluvial JAUNIAUX, CATHERINE: Fluvial
Code:AdHoc2
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Recorded and released on the Woof label, this LP was a compositional collaboration between Tim Hodgkinson and Catherine Jauniaux. Guests included 2 other ex-Henry Cow members, Lindsay Cooper and Georgie Born, This Heat's Charles Bullen, The Work's Bill Gilonis and Furious Pig's Dominic Weeks. With very varied instrumentation, organised in small groups, these are mostly experimental pieces centred around the voice, which is extended in all dimensions, though largely avoiding conventional melody. That said, there is a tango, a song by Brecht and Dessau and a pair of Blake texts set by Tim that are more straightforward. The Dessau I liked a lot. References vary from contemporary music through ethnic, complexity through trance. The Blake songs are little epics with, to my ear, a faint art bears-without- the-beat flavour; they are also fully formed compositions that prefigure some of Tim's later work.

JENKINS, ALAN and the THURSTON LAVA TUBE: Free Surf Music #3
Code:Cordelia041
Price: £14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
Impeccable extended guitar instrumentals that take the form seriously - but not too seriously - playing as if to the manner born. No other group that I have heard working today comes close. Not imitative so much as steeped in the form, which it also stretches - there's plenty of psychedelia mixed in here - but never breaks. If you like the form, this is for you, otherwise...it's fun. As a bonus there are a further 76 tracks offered here, in the form of a few hours worth of mp3 files.

  JESIONKA, WARSZAWSKA: Greatest Hits
Code:JESIONKAGreatestHits
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
In a green card folding case, this CD contains one track consisting of 17 concerts by leading composers of the 20th century, ranging from Cage to Xenakis, 'simultaneously performed' (punderphonically). The quartet, un-named on the CD, then performed individually, without listening to one another, mixing their tracks down to make an 18th work, mixed in with the rest. The result is a kind of ideal, massive Xenakis-like (but better, much better) symphonic roar that makes a perfect plea for the spirit of the first 2/3 of C20 music. It really is completely great. And likely to vanish. A great plunder classic.

  JON and UTSUNOMIYA: S/T
Code:MIMI004
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Utsunomiya some will recall was the genius behind the sound of After Dinner. Here, working with singer and accordionist JON, he has produced a CD that is more or less indescribable. It is a work of pure sound (and comes with a long and thoughtful essay about sound, place and performance. Do not expect 'weird' sounds and conventional complexity, nor electronics.. this is superficially baffling but essentially and existentially a genuine innovation. You can't listen to it for 'the music', it is a complete event, and there are listening recommendations which it pays to follow. Japanese release. limited quantity.

  JONES, DAVID: Atmosphere Flying
Code:TP038
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
* Specialised. Jones is an extremely accomplished percussionist and here he ranges from exquisite and imaginative experiments to jazzy and new age pieces. So it's a mixed bag. But highly advanced polyrhythmic ideas are explored, especially 2 and 4 against 5, extended over whole compositions. Mostly performed by 2 percussionists and bass, with occasional voice (percussion includes the whole tuned percussion family: marimba, bells, vibraphone &c. as well as conventional kit) Enough fascinating moments to be Of Interest, and for drummers probably rather more than that. Essentially though, however scintillating the playing often is, the whole enterprise is infused with a quasi commercial jazz lightness. But I had to include it. Very cleanly recorded. Prog mavens will probably like it too.

JONSSON, LACH'N: Songs From The Cities Decay (vinyl)
Code:BAR8901
Price: £13.87
Quantity in Basket: none
An excellent LP. These are extended songs, with a wealth of instrumental and performance material as well as treated and arranged 'sound'. Traditional skills of playing, rhythmic extrapolation, expression and composition predominate. Careful, integrated and stimulating work.THIS IS A VINYL RELEASE

JONSSON, LACH'N: Songs from the Cities of Decay
Code:BAR9602
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Welcome reissue, with new intermezzo track, of the dark but fascinating LP featuring Lars on everything! Great drums and arrangements, accomplished use of odd metres and cross genre vocabularies (rock, medieval music, industrial noise) and strong composition. Nice to have it back.

JORGENS, P.O: The Technology of Touch
Code:NWM008
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A record it's hard to describe and do justice to. Consisting essentially of all manner of percussion carefully arranged and orchestrated, displaying a fine ear for detail and a sure sense of rhythm and dramaturgy. Each piece explores a clear set of sonorities and developmental possibilities with considerable imagination and variety. It's not contemporary, ethnic, minimal, repetitive, indulgent, jazzy ... but I can't say what it is.

  JOVANOVIC, ARSENIJE: (same title)
Code:LDV008
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
4 Radio pieces. Hard to describe. Diffuse, mysterious; acoustic rather than electronic sources, though hard to distinguish, except for many voices. Parts recorded underground but not echoic. Organic and shape-shifting. For those who tend to the abstract fringes.

JOYCE, JAMES: The Complete Recordings CD+120pp Book
Code:SR60
Price: £18.21
Quantity in Basket: none
First publication of two readings, one from Ulysses recorded in 1924, the other from the extraordinary Ann Livia Plurabelle section of Finnegans Wake, recorded in 1929. The quality of the first is pretty appalling, but the second is good, and wonderfully read, showing that The Wake was written to sound. It really is extraordinary, short though it is and brutally truncated. Highly specialised but a crucial document for some. With a fat 110pp booklet by Eugene Jolas, being a memoire of his friendship with Joyce and the tribulations of publishing.

JULIUS, ROLF : Julius (halb) Schwarz
Code:RZ4001
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
7 listening pieces by sound artist Rolf Julius, all concerned with small sounds, air tinting sounds, though these retain their fragility even at high volume and become immersive. Minimal and not musical, but an important document from one of Germany's major sound artists.

JULIUS, ROLF and MIKI YUI: Small sounds meet small music
Code:e/scd2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Nice RJ drawing on the front and that quiet, fine-tuned, busy, Brownian-motion burbling that is Julius' distinctive trademark. From a concert in Torino in 2005.

JULIUS, ROLF: Music for a Garden
Code:MF0001-2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
In the series, this is a sound-work made for a permanent garden installation at the mattress factory in Pennsylvania. The classic Julius forest of small sounds, various articulated; atmospheres and shifting colours. Meticulous. All white with foldout insert with drawings and some text by RJ. Art Edition.

JULIUS, ROLF: Music for the ears
Code:smallmusicno.1
Price: £14.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Sound art pioneer Julius offers two long pieces here: Song from the Past and Music on two High Poles. These are small, very human, pieces made from unidentifiable sounds microtonally articulated; fragile but dogged, like young plants; structure without much form; busy being rather than doing; neither flesh nor fish. They are working but it's hard to know how - or what they want. So, an acquired taste but, for the curious, informative. Works especially well half-heard, pianissimo, or accidentally from another room, blended with the world.

  JULVERNE: Le Retour
Code:IGL089
Price: £14.69

Cult Belgian chamber rock/jazz/tango/ progressive group. Some very interesting arrangements. Part is a reissue of their most famous LP.

JUNGHANS, STEFFEN BASHO : Waters in Azure
Code:SAAH005CD

Quantity in Basket: none
* Very minimal steel string and slide guitar.

  JUSTINE: Langages Fantas..
Code:AM033CD
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Right on course with another excellent CD. Justine assemble their pieces from unlikely material but with a fine ear for exactly the perfect sounds and structural movements. You can feel the people behind the playing and the raw edges here are vital links between listener and performer; unlike many 'experimental' groups, who seem to be afraid to take emotional responsibility for their work, Justine finds its centre and its strength precisely here.

  JUSTINE: Suite
Code:AM016CD
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
The core of 'Wondeurbrass' and 'Les Poules', here Joane Hetu, Diane Labrosse, Danielle Roger are joined by Marie Trudeau and guests Tenko and Zeena Parkins on 2 tracks. Continuing their work, their way. Excellent.

  K SPACE: Going Up
Code:AdHoc12
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
This is not like an improvised music record, When you hear this you realise how unfree a lot of improvising is, how stuck it is in a language and an approach to the organisation of sound that is actually quite narrow. Having a Tuvan shaman in the band and two serious anthropologists helps of course, and the hardly recognisable instrumentation and the very inspired use of field recordings and sudden mutterings close to your ear. At its best, this CD does suggest a different discursive space, a different 'form of life' ('to imagine a language is to imagine a form of life' Wittgenstein). To me the first 2 tracks really do achieve alien status. More information on package would be nice.

  K-SPACE: Bear Bones
Code:S:AMCD247
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Tim Hodgkinson, Ken Hyder and Shaman Gendos Chamzyryn marshalling vocals, percussion, ektara, doshpulur, samples, electronics, piano, alto sax and lap steel guitar. There are some genuinely counterintuitive moments here, of a truly strange and persuasive music. Try listening as you look at the cheery picture of the band on the cover.. Gendos' growling, yapping vocals are a highlight. Ken Hyder's website

  K-SPACE: Infinity
Code:AdHoc21
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
A first in formatting. This CD will only play on your computer, on the on the other hand it will always be different, every time you listen to it. K Space is Tim Hodgkinson (electronics, Hawaiian guitar, reeds), Ken Hyder, (percussion, voice) and Gendos Chamzyryn (voice and percussion), but this doesn't tell you much. There are also environmental recordings here, and deconstructed fragments, all pooled so that specially written software will compile and sequence 20minute pieces according to complex algorithms (rather than just randomly) that will never repeat. In other words there is no object here that will deliver what you know; there are materials that are constantly recombined so that each audition will be something unexpected. A great idea, brilliantly realised.

  KAGEL, MAURICIO: Acustica (1968-1970)
Code:ZZT080403
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
This is a seminal work from the late '60s by one of the giants of the second half of the C20, a piece for 'experimental sound-producers and loudspeakers. The sound-producers constitute a complete zoo of specially constructed instruments: compressed air cylinder & metal pipes, turntables with various attachments (giant horns, tin-cans, funnels, fountain pens), a castanet array, a blow-torch with metal tubes, balloons with mouthpieces, a bucket of water with stones, a nail violin, a stick with bicycle bells, a thunder-sheet, a 5-tongued ratchet, giant combs and paper, electric fans, a bull-roarer, megaphones, a bell board, toy instruments, bellows, a conveyor belt, a walkie-talkie -and so on (all illustrated in the booklet) so that the stage is more like a playpen or a workshop. The sounds are unfamiliar, unidentifiable for the most part and, this being contemporary music, organised. A recent recording (2007), supervised by Kagel himself a year before his death. There are two versions on the CD, each around 36 minutes long. This is an important and historic hybrid work blurring the lines between theatre, music and a demonstration of physical laws.

Minimal kit drum percussion pieces, very inventive, simple and original, where rhythm is a mirror through which shifting sonorities and melodic modulations are explored. A strong concept excellently realised. Sound counts (engineered by Bob Drake).
